| Alaska's Arctic encompasses the area north of the Brooks Range, and is generally referred to as the North Slope. The Chukchi Sea lies to the northwest and the Beaufort Sea to the northeast while the eastern border is shared with Canada's Yukon Territory. Almost all of the stations in this region are located near the coast, with few inland locations. The northernmost community in the United States is located here at Barrow, a community just south of Point Barrow on the Arctic Coast. To the west lies the Prudhoe Bay oilfields and the start of the Alaska oil pipeline. Only one road connects this region with the rest of Alaska - the Dalton highway, or 'Haul Road', which is a mostly gravel road primarily used by pipeline service vehicles. |
