Observing Stations - SNOTEL
The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), part of the US Department of Agriculture, maintains and operates a remote SNOpack TELemetry, or SNOTEL, network in 11 western states, including Alaska.
SNOTEL sites represent a network of automated stations that are generally in remote locations in high mountain regions. Precipitation, snow water content, and air temeprature are the main variables measured at the SNOTEL sites.

The map at right shows the location of the SNOTEL sites in Alaska, there are 46 sites currently in operation. For a listing of the locations click here. For more information about the SNOTEL program and access to current and historical data, visit the NRCS SNOTEL website.
