COMET HALE-BOPP from Fairbanks, Alaska

These images are intended for non-commercial, educational uses and are copyrighted (1997, Jan Curtis).



The following images were taken into Photoshop and "cleaned up". That means only dust and scratch removal and some color balance and contrast adjustments were made. None of these involve any more digital darkroom finesse than that. I've tried to represent the original prints as faithfully as possible. Minor problems with the scanner has rendered some images with an artifact color band (green) at the bottom of the picture.

All pictures were taken 3 miles west of Fairbanks under various sky conditions.

The Traveller

Nikon FM2 w/35 mm Nikkor lens at f/2.0 on Royal Gold Kodacolor 400 film for 25 seconds. Comet almost lost in aurora. The northern lights resulted from a major solar flare on 8 Apr as reported in world news.

Image on 29th contains aurora (left) and meteor streak near comet's tail. Meteor was estimated (-2 mag) and was traveling quickly. Skies on the 30th were very dark in contrast to the 29th. Temperature 3 degs F both days.
