| Fairbanks set a new record precipitation total this July with 5.96 inches recorded at the International Airport reporting station. This is more than 50% of the average annual total in just one month. The previous record of 5.39 inches was set back in 1922. Normally Fairbanks receives 1.73 inches in July, however this was surpassed in a one-day total this July with 2.33 inches falling on the 27th, which was preceded by 1.1 inches on the 26th. In total, Fairbanks residents experienced 18 days with measurable precipitation for the month. Area rivers and streams showed a dramatic rise during the month of July due to the heavy precipitation. Levels were quite low by the end of June thanks to dry conditions for the previous winter and spring seasons. Since November of 2002, the cumulative water year precipitation (taken from September 2002 to August 2003) has been in a deficit, until the July rains. Precipitation conditions are now just over 11 inches for the year, which is about two inches above the normal cumulative total. |
