The old records were a 47° high temperature and a 42° warmest-minimum temperature. Also, on the 11th, the low temperature was 44°, another warmest-minimum record, the old record being 40° in 1991. The low for the month was 4° on the 31st. Precipitation in Nome this month was 0.91, 66% of normal for the month and the snowfall totaled 2.5. A storm originating in the Bering Sea the weekend of the 10th brought record high temperatures and the first ever October thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are considered a rare event even in summer. However, this event broke all the rules, not only by forming late in the season, but also by striking at night. As a result, residents of Nome were treated to a show of off shore lightning strikes. |
