Fairbanks May 2016

Fairbanks had a mean monthly temperature of 53.4°F, 4.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 82°F on the 14th which set a daily high record for that day, breaking the old 1915 record by 2°F. The lowest temperature for the month was below freezing at 31°F on the 5th

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 0.78” measured and 0.60” expected. The rainfall on the 2nd totaled 0.42", breaking the daily record set in 1989 by 0.33". No snowfall occurred, while the long term mean is 0.9”. The highest wind speed was 34 mph on the 24th from a westerly direction, while the average wind speed was 6.0 mph.

Anchorage May 2016

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 52.0°F this May, 4.2°F above the long term normal. The highest temperature for the month was 72°F occurring on both the 15th and the 27th, setting a new daily record for the 15th, breaking the old 2014 record by 7°F. The high of 71°F on the 13th tied the record set in 1996. The lowest temperature for the month was 34°F on the 2nd and 5th. This was the second warmest May on record, with only 2014 having a warmer mean monthly temperature by 0.5°F.

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.33” measured and 0.72” expected. There was no observed snowfall for the month, while there is normally 0.3”. The highest wind speed was 41 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 16th, while the average wind speed was 7.5 mph.

Barrow May 2016

The mean monthly temperature for May in Barrow was 28.7°F, 7.6°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F on the 30th,which tied the record for this day set way back in 1927. Three other high daily records were set: on the 11th, the 41°F observed broke the 2014 record by 5°F and on the 12th the 41°F observed broke the old 1996 record of 39°F, finally, the high of 42°F on the 13th broke the 1928 record by 4°F. This month also held the highest mean maximum temperature of 32.3°F breaking the old record set in 2015 by 0.2°F, as well as being the warmest May on record, breaking the old 1991 record by 0.7°F.

A mere 0.07” of precipitation was measured, while 0.18” were expected. Snowfall was also lighter than normal, with 0.9” measured, just 33% of normal. The highest wind speed was 30 mph occurring n the 29th from a southeasterly direction. The average wind speed was 11.9 mph.

Delta Junction May 2016

 

 

 

 

 

Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of 50.4°F, 2.8°F above the normal 47.6°F. The highest temperature for the month was 78°F on the 14th, which also set a new record for the day, smashing the old 2005 record by 7°F. Further, the high of 77°F on the 13th tied the daily record set in 1995. The lowest temperature for the month was 31°F occurring on both the 2nd and 5th.

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.71” measured, and 0.90” expected.

Juneau May 2016

June’s mean monthly temperature in Juneau was 51.8°F, 3.2°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 79°F on the 13th, setting a record for that day, breaking the old 1942 record by 4°F. Two other daily high records were set: on the 14th the 77°F observed broke the 1942 record of 74°F, and on the 15th the 75°F observed broke the 1993 record by 2°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 37°F on the 11th.

Precipitation was 167% of normal, with 5.67” measured and 3.40” expected. A daily record rainfall was recorded on the 6th with 1.56", breaking the 1965 record of 1.10". The average wind speed was 7.1 mph while the highest wind speed was 42 mph on the 17th blowing from a southeasterly direction.

Ketchikan May 2016

Ketchikan had a mean monthly temperature of 52.9°F this June, 4.3°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 77°F occurring on both the 13th and 14th. The lowest temperature for the month was 35°F on the 5th.

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 9.38” measured, 114% of normal. Aiding this high precipitation total was the new daily record of 1.99" set on then 17th, breaking the old record of 1.61" from 1975.

King Salmon May 2016

The mean monthly temperature for King Salmon for June was 49.0°F, 4.8°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 77°F on the 27th, which set a record for that day, breaking the old 2006 record by 1°F. The high of 71°F on the 13th tied the record from 2014, then the next day the high of 73°F broke the 2014 record of 72°F. On the 15th the high of 73°F tied the record also set in 2014. One other daily high record events were set: on the 14th a temperature of 73°F was observed breaking the old 2014 by 1°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 33°F occurring on the 19th.

Precipitation was heavier than normal with 3.17” measured, and 1.25” expected. No snowfall was observed, while 0.8” is normally expected. The average wind speed was 9.2 mph while the highest was 44 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 20th.

Kodiak May 2016

Kodiak had a mean monthly temperature of 48.2°F, 3.9°F above the 44.3°F normal. The highest temperature for the month was 67°F on the 15th, while the lowest was 36°F on the 13th.

Precipitation was just 58% of normal, with 3.25” measured and 5.62” expected. No snowfall was observed, while 0.2” are normally expected. The average wind speed was 8.7 mph, while the highest wind speed was 42 mph from a northerly direction on the 31st.

Nome May 2016

Nome had a mean monthly temperature of 42.9°F, 6.1°F above the 36.8°F normally expected. The highest temperature for the month was 74°F on the 31st, which tied the record for that day set in 1990. Two days earlier, on the 29th, the 73°F that was observed broke the record for that day by 1°F, originally set in 1981. The lowest temperature for the month was 28°F on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

Precipitation was higher than normal at 1.22” measured and 0.86” expected. The total precipitation of 0.34" on the 25th set a new daily record, breaking the 1988 record of 0.25". Also, the total of 0.38" precipitation on the 25th broke the 2001 record also of 0.25". No snowfall was observed while 2.3” are normally expected. The average wind speed was 9.3 mph, while the highest wind speed was 35 mph on the 11th from a southeasterly direction.
