Fairbanks October 2016

October’s mean monthly temperature for Fairbanks was 26.7°F, 2.5°F above the normal of 24.2°F. The highest temperature for the month was 59°F on the 1st, while the coldest was -2°F on both the 23rd and 24th.

 

Snowfall was a mere 0.8”, just 7% of the 10.8” normally expected. This is the second lowest amount in over a hundred years with the record being just 0.07" measured in 2013. The average wind speed was 3.7 mph while the highest wind speed was 36 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 17th.

Anchorage Octoboer 2016

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 35.9°F in October, 1.1°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 54°F on the 4th, while the lowest was 15°F on both the 24th and 25th.

 

Precipitation was just 31% of normal, with 0.63” measured. Snowfall was also less than normal, with 2.6” measured, 33% of the 7.9” normally expected. The highest wind speed for the month was 41 mph on the 17th from a northeasterly direction, while the average wind speed was 4.5 mph.

Barrow October 2016

October’s mean monthly temperature for Barrow was 30.1°F, a significant 12.9°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F on the 10th, breaking the high temperature record for that day, set in 1925 by 1°F. Three other records were set: on the 4th the 39°F observed broke the old 1937 record for that day by 1°F, on the 29th the 41°F observed shattered the old 1911 record by 6°F, and on the 30th the 36°F observed broke the old 1911 record by 1°F. The high temperature of 35°F on the 26th tied the old record from 1946. The lowest temperature for the month was 13°F on the 25th.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 0.28” recorded and 0.41” expected. Snowfall was roughly 1/3rd of the 9.1” normal, with 3.0” measured. The highest wind speed for the month was 39 mph occurring on the 1st from a southeasterly direction and again on the 21st from a westerly direction. The average wind speed was 13.5 mph.

Delta Junction October 2016

Delta Junction’s October mean monthly temperature was 26.3°F, 2.2°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 50°F occurring on both the 1st and 9th, while the lowest temperature was -11°F on the 23rd.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal with a mere 0.10” measured, 0.70” less than normal.

Juneau October 2016

Juneau had a mean monthly temperature of 40.2°F in October, 2.2°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 57°F on the 6th. The lowest temperature was 24°F occurring on the 11th, 12th, and 13th, on the 13th it set a record for that day for the lowest temperature breaking the old 1992 record by 2°F.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 2.59” measured, just 30% of the normal 8.63”. Snowfall, however, was much higher than normal with 5.7” recorded, and just 0.8” normally expected. 5.1” inches of the monthly snowfall occurred on the 16th. The average wind speed was 4.1 mph while the highest wind speed was 37 mph from an easterly direction on the 13th.

Ketchikan October 2016

Ketchikan had a mean monthly temperature of 46.6°F this October, 1.3°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 59°F on the 3rd while the lowest was 31°F on the 11th.

 

Precipitation was just 38% of normal, with 7.38” measured and 19.22" expected.

King Salmon October 2016

October’s mean monthly temperature in King Salmon was 40.4°F, 6.9°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 63°F on the 13th, which set a record for that day, breaking the 1993 record by 6°F. There were seven other daily high events: on the 3rd the 59°F observed broke the old 2012 record by 1°F, two days later on the 5th the 58°F recorded broke the old 2015 record by 1°F, next on the 10th the high of 57°F tied the 2009 record. The next day the 56°F high tied the 2012 record. Then on the 12th the 59°F observed broke the old 2009 record by 4°F, and finally on the 28th the 54°F observed broke the old 1991 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 9°F on the 23rd.

 

Precipitation was 54% of normal with 1.12” measured and 2.08” expected. Only trace amounts of snowfall were observed, while 2.8” is normally expected. The average wind speed was 10.8 mph while the fastest wind speed was 66 mph from an easterly direction on the 11th.

Kodiak October 2016

The mean monthly temperature for Kodiak in October was 44.0°F, 3.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 59°F on the 3rd. One daily high record was set, on the 13th the high of 55°F observed broke the old 1936 record for that day by 1°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 22°F on the 18th, setting a daily low record for that day, breaking the old record of 24°F set in 1994. One day prior, on the 17th, the 23°F observed also set a low record for that day, breaking the old 1997 record by 1°F.

 

Precipitation was 140% of normal with 11.58” measured and 8.26” expected. Snowfall however was a mere 0.2” while 1.1” were expected. The average wind speed was 12.3 mph while the highest wind speed was 56 mph occurring on the 11th from a northeasterly direction and on the 18th from a northeasterly direction.

Nome October 2016

Nome’s October mean monthly temperature was 37.7°F, a significant 9.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 59°F on the 12th, which set a record for that day, breaking the old 1938 record by 1°F. Two more records were set, both breaking the record for their respective days by 1°F: on the 11th a temperature of 52°F was recorded breaking the 1979 record, and on the 31st 43°F was observed, breaking the 1911 record. The high of 44°F on the 29th tied the 2002 record. The lowest temperature for the month was 16°F on the 21st.

 

Precipitation was slightly above normal with 1.70” measured and 1.61” expected. Snowfall was just 2% of normal with 0.1” measured and 4.6” expected. The average wind speed was 13.4 mph while the highest wind speed was 55 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 29th.
