Anchorage March 2017

 

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 19.2°F this March, 7.4°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 35°F on the 26th, 30th and 31st, while the lowest temperature was -8°F on the 7th.

Precipitation was slightly above normal, with 0.67” measured, 0.07” above normal, while snowfall was 104% of normal, with 10.3” recorded and 9.9” usually expected. Of the total snowfall, 8.4" fell on the 29th, a new daily record, breaking the old 2001 record of 3.4". Average snow depth was twice normal. The average wind speed was 8.2 mph, while the highest was 42 mph from a northerly direction on the 1st.

Barrow March 2017

  

The mean monthly temperature for Barrow in March was -7.4°F, 5.3°F above the normal of -12.7°F. The highest temperature for the month occurred on the 10th and 11th at 26°F while the lowest was -34°F occurring on the 19th.

Precipitation was 0.21” higher than normal, with 0.30” measured and 0.09” expected. Snowfall was recorded at 2.4”, 0.3” above normal. The average wind speed was 11.0 mph, while the highest value was 36 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 9th.

Delta Junction March 2017

  

Delta Junction’s mean monthly temperature was 0.0°F in March, a significant 14.1°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 45°F on the 31st. The lowest temperature recorded this month was -33°F on the 2nd and 6th.

Precipitation was 0.47”, 0.29” above the normal of 0.18". Most of that total precipitation fell on the 11th, for a daily total of 0.34", setting a new daily record, breaking the old 1967 record of 0.13".

Fairbanks March 2017

  

Fairbanks had a mean monthly temperature of -3.0°F, a significant 14.4°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 48°F occurring on the 31st, while the lowest was -39°F on the 8th.

Precipitation was 0.17”, 0.08” below the normal of 0.25”. Snowfall was measured at 3.5”, 71% of normal, 1.4” below the expected 4.9”. Average snow depth was higher than normal. The highest wind speed was 25 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 15th, while the average wind speed was 3.0 mph.

Juneau March 2017

 

The mean monthly temperature for Juneau in March was 27.4°F, 6.4°F below the normal for the month. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F occurring on the 26th and 28th. The lowest temperature for the month was 5°F occurring on the 5th.

Precipitation was slightly heavier than normal with 4.44” measured, 0.66” above normal. Snowfall was significantly above normal, with 32.2” measured and 11.6” expected. The snowfall total of 7.5" that fell on the 12th set a new record for that day, breaking the old record of 6.3" set in 2010. Then on the 14th, 7.2" of snow fell, also setting a daily record, topping the 1989 record of 4.2". The three-day snowfall from the 12th to 14th totaled 20.8", while 8 days of the month had more than 1" of snow. The highest wind speed was 43 mph from an easterly direction on the 11th while the average wind speed was 9.3 mph.

Ketchikan March 2017

 

Ketchikan had a mean monthly temperature of 33.8°F, 4.0°F below the normal for March. The highest temperature for the month was 48°F occurring on the 26th, while the lowest was 7°F on the 10th, a new daily record low, breaking the old daily low of 9°F set in 2003.

Precipitation was heavier than normal, with 16.11” measured, with 10.89” normally expected. The total precipitation of 1.77" on the 14th set a new record for that day, breaking the 1.60 record set in 1966. Then on the 31st the precipitation total of 1.91" broke the 1992 record of 1.48".

King Salmon March 2017

 

King Salmon had a mean monthly temperature of 12.4°F this March, a significant 11.7°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 52°F occurring on the 31st while the lowest was -10°F on the 18th.

Precipitation was very light and recorded at 0.05”, 0.65” below normal, while snowfall was also very light with just 3% of normal, with 0.2” measured and 6.4” normally expected. The average wind speed was 10.9 mph while the highest wind speed was 51 mph from a northerly direction on the 15th.

Kodiak March 2017

 

March’s mean monthly temperature for Kodiak was 28.8°F, 4.0°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 40°F occurring on the 27th and 31st, while the minimum was 16°F occurring on the 18th.

Precipitation was light and measured at 0.70”, just 13% of the normal of 5.53", while snowfall was also 13% of normal with 1.5” recorded and 11.3” expected. The average wind speed was 12.4 mph while the highest wind speed was 57 mph from a northwesterly direction on the 2nd.

Nome March 2017

 

Nome had a mean monthly temperature of 0.6°F this March, 9.7°F below the normal of 10.3°F. The highest temperature for the month was 26°F on the 31st, while the lowest value was -23°F on the 1st.

Precipitation was significantly lower than normal with 0.01” measured, just 2% of the normal of 0.65". Snowfall was likewise very low with just 10% of normal with a total of 0.9". The average wind speed was 3.4 mph while the highest was 33 mph from a northwesterly direction on the 14th and northerly direction on the 31st.
