Fairbanks December 2016

Fairbanks’ mean monthly temperature was -8.4°F, 4.3°F below normal for December. The highest temperature for the month was 35°F on the 31st, while the lowest was -36°F on the 4th.

 

Precipitation was 206% above normal, with 1.96” measured, and 0.64” expected. Snowfall was measured at 32.9”, 20.8” above normal, with 10.4” of it falling on the 29th, which broke a record for that day by 4.9”, originally was set in 1951. The next day, a total of 3.5" of snow fell, breaking the 1951 record for that day of 2.4". The average wind speed was 2.2 mph, with the highest wind speed reaching 51 mph on the 31st from a westerly direction.

Anchorage December 2016

Anchorage recorded a mean monthly temperature of 16.0°F in December, -3.0°F below normal. The highest temperature for the month was 37°F occurring on both the 17th. The lowest temperature for the month was -8°F on the 5th.

 

Precipitation was slightly heavier than normal with 1.47” measured, 0.36” above normal, contributing was the 0.46” that fell on the 1st, which set a new daily record, breaking the old 1974 record by 0.06”. Snowfall was just 1% above normal at 16.9” recorded, 0.2” above the long term mean. However, 7.7” of this fell on the 1st, which set a new daily record for that day, breaking the old 1974 record by 1.7”. The average wind speed was 5.7 mph while the highest value was 32 mph recorded on the 3rd from a northerly direction.

Barrow December 2016

The mean monthly temperature for Barrow in December was 0.1°F, 7.9°F above normal. This is a very substantial positive deviation for the most northern city in Alaska, and it was warmer than Fairbanks, located in the Interior. The highest temperature for the month was 26°F on the 30th, while the lowest was -23°F on the 4th.

 

Precipitation was double the normal amount, with 0.28” measured. Snowfall was slightly higher than normal, with 4.0” recorded, and 3.5” expected. The average wind speed was 13.7 mph while the highest was 56 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 30th.

Delta Junction December 2016

Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of 0.5°F, 1.6°F below normal this December. The highest temperature, 34°F occurred on the 31st, while the lowest temperature was -32°F on the 4th.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 0.27” measured and 0.38” expected.

Juneau December 2016

Ketchikan December 2016

Ketchikan had a mean monthly temperature of 31.2°F, 4.1°F below normal in December. The highest temperature for the month was 49°F occurring on the 2nd, while the lowest was 15°F on both the 13th and 14th.

King Salmon December 2016

King Salmon’s December mean monthly temperature was 0.2°F above normal, at 18.8°F. The highest temperature for the month was 46°F on the 31st, a new daily high record, breaking the old record from 1984 by 1°F. while the lowest was -23°F on the 3rd.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 1.09” measured and 1.23” expected. Snowfall was also lighter than expected, with just 58% of the 9.5” normal value, with 5.5” measured. The average wind speed was 9.3 mph, while the highest wind speed was 47 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 18th.

Kodiak December 2016

The mean monthly temperature for December in Kodiak was 31.5°F, 0.3°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 43°F occurring on both the 16th and the 30th. The lowest temperature for the month was 13°F on the 5th.

 

Precipitation was just 47% of normal with 4.11” measured and 8.73” normally expected. Snowfall was just 26% of normal with a mere 3.6” recorded compared to the 13.8” expected. The highest wind speed was 83 mph from a westerly direction on the 2nd, while the average wind speed was 10.8 mph.

Nome December 2016

Nome had a mean monthly temperature of 13.0°F this December, 3.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 35°F on the 31st while the lowest was -15°F on both the 2nd and the 6th.

 

Precipitation was near normal, with 1.07” measured, just 0.01” below normal. Snowfall was heavier than normal with 16.0” measured, 1.5” above the mean. The average wind speed was 10.9 mph, while the highest wind speed was 55 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 30th.
