Fairbanks April 2016

Fairbanks had a mean monthly temperature of 42.4°F, 9.9°F above normal this April. The highest temperature for the month was 67°F on the 25th, while the lowest was 19°F on the 2nd. The high of 66°F on the 23rd tied the daily high set in 1940.

 

Precipitation was heavier that normal, with 0.52" measured, 0.21" above normal. Snowfall was also higher than normal, with 3.7" recorded, 0.8" above the normal of 2.9". Remarkably, more than half of this fell on a single day, with 2.3" on the 3rd, which broke the daily record, set in 1970, for that day by 0.9". The highest wind speed was 30 mph occurring on the 17th from a northeasterly direction and on the 21st from a northeasterly direction as well. The average wind speed was 6.4 mph.

Anchorage April 2016

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 43.5°F in April, 6.7°F above normal. This was also the warmest April on record for the city. The highest temperature for the month was 58°F occurring on both the 21st, which set a record for that day, breaking the old 2014 record by 3°F, and 24th. Seven other daily high records events were noted: On the 1st the high of 51°F tied the old record from 1995, then on the 7th, a high of 53°F was recorded, breaking the old record, set in just last year, by 3°F, on the next day the high of 51°F tied the record from 1990. The 55°F measured on the 12th broke the old 1997 record by 3°F, then the next day the 53°F broke the old 2000 record by 2°F, and then on the 14th the 54°F recorded broke the 1965 record by 3°F. Finally, the high of 22°F on the 22nd tied the record from two years ago. The lowest temperature for the month was 29°F on both the 4th and 8th.

 

Precipitation was just 4% of normal, with 0.02" measured and 0.47" expected. No snowfall was recorded by 4.0" are normally expected. The highest wind speed was 40 mph, occurring on the 13th from a southerly direction, and on the 23rd from a southeasterly direction. The average wind speed was 7.3 mph.

Barrow April 2016

April's mean monthly temperature for Barrow was 10.3°F, 8.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 29°F occurring on the 28th, 29th, and 30th. The lowest temperature was -22°F on the 1st.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.07" measured and 0.16" expected. Snowfall was recorded at 1.2", 2.0" below normal. The highest wind speed was 47 mph on the 10th from an easterly direction. The average wind speed was 18.2 mph.

Delta Junction April 2016

Delta Junction had an April mean monthly temperature of 41.7°F, 9.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 63°F on the 24th, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old 1994 record by 1°F. Two more records were set, on the 1st the 52°F observed broke the old 1994 by 2°F, and on the 5th the 51°F observed broke the old 1958 record by 1°F. The high of 54°F tied the record set in 1997. April 2016 was the warmest April on record for Delta Junction, topping the old record from 1993 by 1.4°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 20°F on the 4th.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 0.13" measured and 0.23" expected.

Juneau April 2016

The mean monthly temperature for Juneau in April was 44.9°F, 4.1°F above normal. This makes 2016 the warmest April on record for Juneau, breaking the old record of 44.4°F from 1993. The highest temperature for the month was 61°F on the 22nd. A daily high record was also set on the 1st, when a temperature of 58°F was recorded, breaking the old 1958 record by 2°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 30°F on the 20th.

 

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 5.16" measured, 176% of the 2.94" normal. Only trace amounts of snowfall were observed, while 1.1" is normally expected. One daily rainfall record was set on the 17th with 0.89" measured, breaking the old record of 0.63°F from 1983. The highest wind speed was 40 mph on the 30th from a southeasterly direction, while the average wind speed was 8.0 mph.

Ketchikan April 2016

April's mean monthly temperature in Ketchikan was 47.3°F, 4.8°F above the normal of 42.5°F. The highest temperature for the month was 63°F on the 7th, while the lowest temperature was 34°F on the 9th.

 

Precipitation was 174% of normal, with 16.30" measured, and 9.38" expected.

King Salmon April 2016

King Salmon had a mean monthly temperature of 43.2°F, 9.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 61°F on the 21st, which also set a new record for that day, breaking the 2014 record by 4°F. Nine more daily records were set or tied: on the 2nd, the 51°F observed broke the 1935 record, on the 8th the 51°F topped the 1987 record, on the 9th the 54°F record from 1940 was tied, on the 13th the 59°F recorded broke the 1990 record, on the 15th the record of 58°F from 1965 was tied, on the 16th 57°F was observed, breaking the 1996 record, on the 17th the record of 55°F from 1965 was tied, and on the 22nd the 57°F observed broke the 2008 record, and finally the high of 55°F on the 23rd tied the record from 2014. All these high temperatures resulted in the warmest April on record, topping the 1940 mean of 42.0°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 22°F on the 8th.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.85" measured, 0.12" below the expected 0.97". No snowfall was recorded, while 3.9" was expected. The average wind speed was 10.3 mph, while the highest was 52 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 9th.

Kodiak April 2016

Kodiak had a mean monthly temperature of 42.2°F in April, 4.6°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 50°F occurring on both the 13th and 24th. The lowest temperature was 29°F on the 8th.

 

Precipitation was heavier than normal, with 8.90" measured, 3.09" above the normal of 5.81". The total precipitation of 1.34" on the 23rd broke the 1940 record of 0.97". Snowfall was much lighter than normal, with none recorded, while 8.0" was expected. The average wind speed was 12.4 mph, while the highest wind speed was 48 mph, on the 25th, from an easterly direction.

Nome April 2016

Nome had an April mean monthly temperature of 34.3°F, 13.8°F above the normal of 20.5°F. The highest temperature for the month was 52°F on the 26th, which tied the old 1940 record for that day. Five daily records were set for the month: on the 12th a temperature of 46°F was observed, breaking the 2004 record for that day of 42°F, on the 18th the 44°F observed broke the old 2014 record by 1°F, on the 20th the 49°F observed broke the 2014 record for that day of 47°F, on the 21st the 50°F observed broke the 1996 record by 5°F, and finally on the 28th the 50°F observed topped the old 1953 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 10°F on the 3rd.

Precipitation was slightly higher than normal, with 0.80" measured, a mere 0.04" above normal. Snowfall was lighter than normal with 6.1" measured, 1.4" less than the expected 7.5". The average wind speed was 8.5 mph, while the highest wind speed was 44 mph on the 1st from a northeasterly direction.
