Fairbanks March 2016

March's mean monthly temperature in Fairbanks was 19.8°F, 8.4°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 51°F on the 25th, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old 1999 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature for the month was -20°F on the 18th.

Precipitation was higher than normal with 0.53" measured and 0.25" expected. Contributing to this was the 0.30" that fell on the 29th, which set a record for that day, breaking the old 1965 of 0.18". Snowfall, however, was less than normal with 3.7" measured and 4.9" expected. The average wind speed was 4.6 mph, while the highest was 25 mph from a northerly direction on the 31st.

Anchorage March 2016

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 33.4°F this March, 6.8°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 53°F on the 31st, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old record by 3°F, set in 1993. Four other daily records were set: on the 22nd the 44°F measured broke the 1965 record of 48°F, 50°F was observed on the 23rd, breaking the 2015 record of 46°F, on the 24th the 51°F observed broke the 2015 record of 48°F, and on the 30th the 50°F broke the old 1974 record for that day of 49°F. Two daily records were tied: on the 12th, the high of 46F tied the 2005 record. Then the next day the high of 44°F tied the record set in 1981. The lowest temperature for the month was 16°F on the 19th.

Precipitation was over double the normal amount with 1.23" measured, 0.63" above normal. Contributing to this were the two daily precipitation records set for the month: 0.23" fell on the 28th, breaking the 2005 record of 0.20", and 0.10" fell on the 30th, breaking the old record of 0.08" set in 2011, 2009 and 1999. Snowfall was also higher than normal, with 10.7" measured and 9.9" expected. 6.4" of snow fell on the 19th, which broke the old 1979 record for that day. The average wind speed was 4.7 mph while the highest wind speed was 39 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 30th.

Barrow March 2016

March's mean monthly temperature for Barrow was -7.2°F, 5.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 4°F on both the 3rd and 24th, while the lowest was -28°F on the 29th.

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.04" measured and 0.09" expected. Snowfall was about half than normal, with 1.0" measured and 2.1" expected. The highest wind speed was 38 mph on the 8th from an easterly direction, while the average wind speed was 12.7 mph.

Delta Junction March 2016

Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of 23.9°F, 9.8°F above the 14.1°F normal. The highest temperature for the month was 56°F on the 31st, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old 1993 record by 8°F. The high of 48°F on the 24th tied the 1998 record. Another record was set on the 25th, where the 48°F observed broke the 1999 record old record of 45°F for that day. The lowest temperature for the month was -5°F on the 17th.

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.08" measured and 0.18" expected.

Juneau March 2016

Juneau had a mean monthly temperature of 39.9°F, 6.1°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 58°F on the 31st, which broke the record for that day by 6°F, which was set in 1981. On the 5th the high of 46°F tied the record set in 2005. Then on the 6th, the 48°F observed broke the 1941 record for that day by 2°F. The high of 46°F on the 10th tied the 1966 record. On the 12th the 50°F observed broke the 1981 record for that day by 1°F, then on the next day the high of 49°F broke the 2005 record by 1°F. And finally on the 23rd the 51°F measured broke the 2006 record of 50°F. Partially due to these records, this was the warmest March on record, the previous warmest March had a mean monthly temperature of 39.6°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 23°F on the 3rd.

Precipitation was just 57% of normal, with 2.17" measured and 3.78" expected. Only trace amounts of snowfall were measured, while 11.6" are normally expected. The average wind speed was 6.3 mph, while the highest was 36 mph on the 11th from a southeasterly direction.

Ketchikan March 2016

Ketchikan had a March mean monthly temperature of 43.8°F, 6.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 65°F on the 31st, which also set a record for that day, breaking the 1926 record of 62°F. Daily records high temperatures were tied twice: on the 2nd the high of 50°F tied the record from 1966. Then the record of 53°F from 1966 was tied on the 18th. The lowest temperature for the month was 30°F which occurred on both the 17th and 18th.

Precipitation was near normal, with 10.47" measured and 10.89" expected.

King Salmon March 2016

King Salmon had a mean monthly temperature this March of 32.9°F, 8.8°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 52°F on the 31st, which broke the daily record for that day by 2°F, which had been set in 1983 and 1934. The high of 49°F on the 13th broke the record of 47°F set in 1934. The lowest temperature for the month was 4°F on the 20th.

Precipitation was 1.25" higher than normal, with 1.95" measured and just 0.70" expected. Snowfall however was less than normal with 4.0" recorded and 6.4" expected. The average wind speed was 9.3 mph, while the highest wind speed was 40 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 1st.

Kodiak March 2016

March's mean monthly temperature for Kodiak was 39.3°F, 6.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 48°F on both the 26th and 28th, while the lowest temperature was 29°F on the 27th.

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 7.34" recorded, and 5.53" expected. Snowfall however was just 32% of normal, with 3.6" measured and 11.3" expected. The average wind speed was 10.4 mph, while the highest wind speed was 57 mph from a southerly direction on the 1st.

Nome March 2016

Nome had a mean monthly temperature of 11.6°F, 1.3°F above normal this March. The highest temperature for the month was 33°F on both the 1st and 2nd, while the lowest temperature was -9°F on the 15th and 16th.

Precipitation was much less than normal; just 0.04" recorded while 0.65" were expected. Snowfall was just a mere 6% of normal with 0.5" measured and 8.9" expected. The average wind speed was 6.9 mph while the highest wind speed was 57 mph on the 31st from a northeasterly direction.
