InKing Salmon the average temperature for October was just under freezing at 31.3°F, 2.2°F below the long term mean. Temperatures were warm for the first third of the month, and then veered to the cold side afterwards. The minimum temperature (4°F) for the month was reported on the 21st, while the maximum temperature occurred on the 7that 61°F, creating a new daily record high, topping the 1925 record of 59°F. Then on the 11th, the high of 56°F tied the record set in 2009.
King Salmon had a less than normal amount of precipitation with a total of 1.86", 0.22" below the long-term mean. Despite the low total, there was a record rainfall on the 7th, with 0.86", besting the 1949 record of 0.71". With the colder temperatures in the later part of the month came two record snowfalls. First, 3.9" fell on the 13th, breaking the 1966 record of 1.5". This was followed with 7.2" on the 14th, shattering the 1956 record of 3.0". Total monthly snowfall was 11.6", 8.8" above normal. The average wind speed was 10.5 mph, and the highest gust of 48 mph occurred on the 4th, blowing from a southerly direction. The 1stset a daily record for the peak wind speed at 36 mph the pervious record had been 32 mph set in 2011.
Kodiak was cooler than normal for October, having a mean temperature of 39.5°F, 1.0°F less than the expected mean of 40.5°F. The maximum temperature for the month (56°F) was observed on the 7th, and the minimum temperature was 24°F, reported on the 22ndand 29th. Temperatures were warm for the first half of the month, and then mixed for the second half.
Precipitation was light at just 57% of normal with a total of 4.71", 3.55" under the normal amount of 8.26". The average wind speed was 9.0 mph, while the highest wind gust occurred on the 15that 46 mph, blowing from a westerly direction.
InDelta Junction the mean temperature for October (21.9°F) was a 2.2°F below the long-term normal of 24.1°F. The highest temperature, a pleasant 61°F, was observed on the 4th, while the lowest temperature hit -12°F on the 24th. Temperatures were warm for the firstthird of the month, and then tended to the cold side for the remainder. Along with the warm temperatures for the first part of the month was a new record high set on the 5that 59°F, breaking the previous record of 57°F set back in 1952.
Precipitation was near normal with a reported total of 0.78", a mere 3% below the expected amount (0.80").
Anchorage was cooler than normal in October, with an average temperature of 33.2°F, 1.6°F below the expected temperature. The maximum temperature (59°F) occurred on the 4th, while the minimum temperature (12°F) occurred on the 23rd. October temperatures started above normal, then tended to be colder after the 12th.
Precipitation was above normal at 2.70", 33% above the normal of 2.03". Snowfall totaled 3.2", 4.7" below the expected amount. The average wind speed was 5.5 mph.
The average temperature inJuneau for October was 38.5°F, 3.9°F below the long-term mean and the 3rdcoldest October on record. This is also the sixth consecutive month with below normal temperatures. Temperatures were warm for the first half of the month, and then turned decidedly cold for the remainder. The maximum temperature of the month was 57°F, occurring on the 6th, while the minimum was 17°F and occurred on the 26thand 29th.
Total precipitation at 3.50" was notably lower than normal it represents only 41% of the expected amount of 8.63", making October the first month in the last six to have below normal precipitation. Surprisingly, for eleven days from the 19thto the 29th, Juneau had no precipitation. The total makes October the second driest on record. Despite the lower than normal precipitation, an new daily record was set on the 13that 1.65", breaking the 1.46" record set back in 1945. The first snow fell on the 16thwith a trace amount that matched the records from 1996 and 1959. Trace amount again fell on the 17th, also matching the records from 1996 and 1959. Total snowfall for the month was 1.4", 0.6" above normal. The average wind speed was 7.2 mph, and the maximum wind speed of 39 mph occurred on the 21st, blowing from an easterly direction.
Ketchikan reported an average temperature this October of 43.0°F, 2.3°F below the long-term mean of 45.3°F. The maximum temperature for the month was 61°F, which occurred on the 7th, while the minimum (20°F) was reported on the 30th. Temperatures tended to the warm side for the first half of the month, then turned cold for the remainder. Exemplifying the cold spell at the end of the month were three record cold events. First, on the 22nd, the temperature dropped to 28°F, breaking the old record of 29°F set way back in 1919. Then on the 24th, the low temperature of 28°F tied the record from 1991. Finally, on the 29ththe low of 25°F matched the record also set in 1991.
Precipitation was light, totaling 8.73", or just 45% of the long term mean of 19.22".
The average temperature inJuneau for September was 49.6°F, 0.4°F below the long term mean. The maximum temperature of the month was 61°F, occurring on the 4thand 21st, while the minimum was 38°F and occurred on the 19thand 30th. Temperatures stayed normal for most of the month, with little daily variation due to the high amount of cloudiness.
Trace amounts of precipitation, or greater, fell on twenty-nine days of the month hence the total was higher than normal at 11.02", this is 2.38" above the expected amount of 8.64". While no new daily precipitation records were set, more than one inch fell on three days of the month, and the total made this the 10thwettest September on record. The average wind speed was 8.8 mph, and the maximum wind speed of 44 mph occurred on the 26th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.
Ketchikan reported average temperature this September of 53.3°F, 0.8°F above the long-term mean of 52.5°F. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F, which occurred on the 7th, while the minimum (41°F) was reported on the 16th.
Precipitation was nearnormal, totaling 14.43", or just 5% above the long term mean of 13.79".
Barrow experienced the sixth month in a row with above normal temperatures this September. The mean value was 34.7°F, a positive deviation of 2.6°F above the normal of 32.1°F. The highest temperature (45°F) occurred on the 23rd, while the lowest temperature (27°F) was reported on the 16th, 29th, and 30th.
Precipitation in Barrow (1.93") was heavy at 168% above the normal value of 0.72", and helping this high total were two new daily record precipitation events. On the 5tha total of 0.34" fell, topping the 2002 record of 0.24". Then on the 23rd, 0.36" fell, breaking the previous record of 0.25" from 2004. Trace amounts or more of precipitation was recorded on 29 days of the month. Snowfall (5.8") was 32% above the normal value of 4.4". The average wind speed was 11.7 mph, while the maximum gust (44 mph) occurred on the 16th, blowing from a northeasterly direction.
