Fairbanks January 2013

In Fairbanks the average temperature for January was -2.7°F, 5.2°F above the long-term mean of -7.9°F, and was also the warmest January in the last decade. The highest temperature was a balmy 37°F on the 14th, while the lowest temperature for the month was bone chilling -48°F on the 27th, a decrease in temperature of 85°F in less than two weeks. The month started off continuing the warm spell from December, cooled for the first week till warming up to the 14th, then trended to the coldest day on the 27th. No new record temperature events were recorded.
Precipitation was again above normal in January, with a total of 0.79", 0.21" above the expected value of 0.58". The storm of the 14th brought a new precipitation record of 0.22", just more than doubling the 2005 record of 0.21". In addition, the 0.15" of rain that day was the highest since 0.52" fell in 1963. Snowfall totaled 9.9" for the month, 0.4" below normal. The mean wind speed was 3.0 mph, with a maximum gust of 28 mph on the 14th and 15th, during the storm, blowing from a westerly direction.

Anchorage January 2013

Anchorage was warmer than normal in January, with an average temperature of 22.4°F, 5.3°F above the expected temperature. The maximum temperature (44°F) occurred on the 14th, while the minimum temperature (-9°F) occurred on the 27th and 28th. January temperatures tended to warmer than normal with the exception of a few days around the 28th.
Precipitation was high at 1.22", 67% above the normal of 0.73". Snowfall totaled 14.7", 3.4" above the expected amount. The average wind speed was 6.4 mph, with a maximum wind speed of 41 mph reported on the 13th, blowing from a southerly direction.

Barrow January 2013

For Barrow, January had above normal mean temperature with a value of ‑8.6°F, a deviation of 4.8°F above the normal of -13.4°F. Temperatures started the month warm, then stayed about normal till the end of the month. The lowest temperature (-26°F) occurred on the 11th, while the highest temperature (9°F) was reported on the 4th.
Precipitation in Barrow (0.06") was light at just 46% of the normal value of 0.13". The average wind speed was 17.0 mph, while the maximum gust (61 mph) occurred on the 13th, blowing from an easterly direction.

Big Delta January 2013

In Delta Junction the mean temperature for January (4.5°F) was 5.5°F above the long-term normal of -1.0°F. The highest temperature (47°F) was observed on the 14th, setting a new record high for this day, smashing the previous value of 40°F set in 2002. This far above normal temperature was observed during a Chinook event, when strong southerly flow of moist air cools moist-adiabaticly on the south side of the Alaska Range, but warms at the higher rate on the dry-adiabaticly north side, transporting warm air to the Interior of Alaska. It was the second highest temperature for the month of the nine stations discussed here, with many of the stations situated more southerly than Delta. The lowest temperature of -48°F was observed on the 28th, a 95°F change in two weeks. Temperatures stayed at or above normal with the exception of the cold spell around the 28th.
Precipitation was above average with a reported total of 0.45", 45% over the expected amount (0.31").

Juneau January 2013

The average temperature in Juneau for January was 31.3°F, 3.0°F above the long-term mean of 28.3°F and was the first month in the last nine with above normal temperatures. The maximum temperature of the month was 43°F on the 1st, while the minimum was 5°F and occurred on the 28th and 29th.
Total precipitation was heavier than normal at 7.70", 44% above the expected amount of 5.35". Total snowfall for the month was 18.2", 9.5" below normal. Due to the above normal temperatures less precipitation fell as snow then expected, which explains the above normal precipitation, but the below normal snowfall. The average wind speed was 6.6 mph, and the maximum wind speed of 42 mph occurred on the 17th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.

Ketchikan January 2013

Ketchikan reported an average temperature this January of 37.9°F, 3.0°F above the long-term mean of 34.9°F. The maximum temperature for the month was 45°F, which occurred on the 1st, 4th, 16th, and 17th, while the minimum (26°F) was reported on the 10th. Temperatures stayed around normal for most of the month.
Precipitation was just below normal, totaling 13.83", or 90% of the long term mean of 15.40".

King Salmon January 2013

In King Salmon the average temperature for January was 25.5°F, a significant 9.3°F above the long-term mean of 16.2°F. Temperatures varied, but tended above normal throughout the month. The minimum temperature (-11°F) for the month was reported on the 27th, while the maximum temperature occurred on the 12th at 49°F, marking a new record for this day, breaking the 2003 record of 45°F. In addition, the max of 42°F on the 22nd tied the record set in 1991.
King Salmon experienced a greater than normal amount of precipitation with a total of 2.40", 1.38", or 135%, above the long-term mean. The 13th experienced 0.33" of precipitation, a new record for this day, topping the old record of 0.26" from 1993. Total monthly snowfall was 13.0", 2.8" above normal. The average wind speed was 11.4 mph, and the highest gust of 68 mph occurred on the 19th, blowing from an easterly direction. This is also a new record wind speed for this day, breaking the 2011 record of 56 mph. Two other daily wind speed records were also set in January.

Kodiak January 2013

Kodiak was warmer than normal for January, with a mean temperature of 33.1°F, 2.6°F above the expected mean of 30.5°F. With the exception of two short cold spells, temperatures tended to be at or above normal for most of January. The maximum temperature for the month (45°F) was observed on the 13th. The minimum temperature was a chilly -10°F, reported on the 27th.
Precipitation was near average with a total of 9.53", 1.24" above the expected amount of 8.29". The 1.59" of rain that fell on the 19th was a new record, topping the 2004 record of 1.12". Snowfall was exactly normal at 13.0”. The average wind speed was 10.0 mph, while the highest wind gust occurred on the 1st at 56 mph, blowing from a southeasterly direction.

Nome January 2013

Nome had a mean temperature for January of 13.5°F, a substantial 8.3°F above the normal value of 5.2°F. With the exception of two short cold spells, temperatures tended toward normal or above normal for most of January. The maximum temperature was reported at 34°F on the 1st and 13th. The minimum temperature for the month was observed on the 27that -20°F.
Unlike the previous four months, January had above normal precipitation with a total of 1.16". This is 23% above the normal amount of 0.94". Snowfall totaled 16.5", 27% above the normal of 12.7". The average monthly wind speed was 11.1 mph, while the maximum wind speed was 47 mph, and occurred on the 29th of the month, blowing from a northeasterly direction.
