Fairbanks December 2014

December's mean monthly temperature for Fairbanks was 12.1°F above normal, with 8.0°F observed for the month, compared to the -4.1°F that was expected. The highest temperature for the month was 37°F on the 31st, continuing a 4-day warm spell started on the 28th, while the lowest temperature was -20°F on the 27th.  It was the second warmest December in 111 years.

Precipitation was slightly higher than normal with 0.93" of precipitation recorded for the month, 0.29" above normal. This was partly due to the 0.39" that fell on the 2nd, breaking the record for that day set in 1992 by 0.1". 15.2" of snowfall was recorded for the month, 126% of the expected 12.1". The average wind speed was 2.5 mph, while the highest wind speed was 24 mph on the 9th from a northerly direction.

Anchorage December 2014

In December 2014 Anchorage's monthly mean temperature was 26.5°F, 7.5°F above the normal of 19.0°F. The warmest temperature for the month was 43°F, occurring on both the 30th and 31st, while the coldest temperature was 13°F on the 13th. The mean temperature for every day of the month was above normal, ranging from a mere 1°F to a substantial 21°F above normal.

Precipitation for December was 0.39" below normal, with 0.72" of precipitation measured for the month. Only 7.5" of snowfall was recorded, just 45% of the 16.7" expected. The average wind speed was 4.2 mph, with a greatest wind speed of 38 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 30th.

Barrow December 2014

Barrow in December was slightly warmer than normal, with a monthly mean temperature of -6.8°F, 1.0°F above normal. The warmest temperature observed for the month was 26°F on the 29th, part of a remarkably warmer than normal 2-day stretch. The coldest temperature was a chilly -28°F on the 27th.

December's precipitation was slightly higher than normal with 0.20" of precipitation recorded, 0.06" above the normal of 0.14". 0.11" of this fell on the 28th breaking the record for that day, set in 1903, by .06". Snowfall was near normal with 3.0" of snowfall for the month, 0.5" less than normal. The highest wind speed was 49 mph on the 28th, from a southeasterly direction, while the average wind speed was 13.4 mph.

Delta Junction December 2014

Delta Junction had a monthly mean temperature of 12.8°F this December, a substantial 10.7°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F occurring on both the 30th, which tied the record for that day, set in 1967, and the 31st, while the lowest was -8°F on the 24th.

Precipitation was very slight for December with just 0.07" of precipitation recorded, 0.31" below the expected amount of 0.38".

Juneau December 2014

Juneau was warmer than normal in December, with a monthly mean temperature of 33.4°F observed, 3.5°F above the 29.9°F expected for the month. The highest temperature for the month was 46°F occurring on the 14th and 15th. The 46°F on the 15th tied the record for that day, set in 2005. The coldest temperature was 9°F on the 1st.

Precipitation was 2.55" less than the normal of 5.84°F, with 3.29" recorded for the month. Snowfall was also lighter than normal with a mere 3.5" of snowfall observed, or 22% of the 15.6" normally expected. The average wind speed was 5.2 mph, with the highest wind speed recorded for the month at 35 mph on the 8th and 9th, both from a southeasterly direction.

Ketchikan December 2014

Ketchikan was warmer than normal this December with a monthly mean temperature of 40.9°F, 5.6°F above the normal of 35.3°F normal. The highest temperature was 54°F on the 7th, while the coldest was 23°F on the 29th.

Precipitation was heavier than normal, with 15.76" of precipitation measured for the month, 111% of the expected 14.23".

King Salmon December 2014

December for King Salmon was much warmer than normal, with a monthly mean of 31.6°F observed, a whopping 13.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 49°F on the 30th, which also broke the record for that day by 6°F, set in 2009, while the coldest was 8°F on the 21st. Numerous high daily temperatures were set throughout the month: on the 7th, the 47°F observed for the day broke the 2013 record by 2°F, the next day, the 48°F observed broke the old record for that day set back in 1937 by 1°F, and on the 29th the 48°F observed broke the 1967 record by 3°F.

Precipitation was higher than normal with a record 1.96" of precipitation for the month, 0.73" above normal. 0.47" of that precipitation fell on the 31st, which broke the record for that day by 0.19", originally set in 1961. Snowfall was 79% of the 9.5" expected, with just 7.5" of snowfall recorded. The highest wind speed was 59 mph on the 29th from an easterly direction, while the mean wind speed was 10.2 mph.

Kodiak December 2014

Kodiak was 7.0°F warmer than normal in December, with a monthly mean temperature of 38.2°F observed. The highest temperature for the month was 47°F on the 7th, which also set a new record for that day, breaking the old one set in 1978 by 1°F. The next day, the 8th, tied the record for that day set in 1978. The lowest temperature for the month was 23°F on the 27th.

Precipitation was much higher than normal, with 13.79" of precipitation measured for the month, 158% of the normal of 8.73". The 3.03" recorded on the 28th smashed the old record, set in 1978, for that day by 1.21". Also, the 2.67" that fell on the 29th topped the 2003 record of 1.09. However, snowfall was much lighter than normal, a mere 2% of the 13.8" normally expected, measuring at just 0.3" for the month. The average wind speed was 11.1 mph, with a highest wind speed of 59 mph on the 7th, from a northeasterly direction.

Nome December 2014

This December Nome's mean monthly temperature was 15.6°F, 6.1°F above the expected 9.5°F. The highest temperature for the month was 35°F on the 30th, while the lowest was -16°F on the 26th.

Precipitation was 50% of normal with 0.54" of precipitation recorded. Snowfall was also light, with 5.1" of snowfall recorded, just 35% of the 14.5" normally expected. The highest wind speed occurred on the 27th at 44 mph from a northeasterly direction, while the average wind speed was 11.2 mph.
