Fairbanks August 2016

Fairbanks had an August mean monthly temperature of 61.1°F, 5.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 79°F on the 13th, while the lowest was 42°F on the 31st.

Precipitation was 83% of normal, with 1.56” measured and 1.88” expected. The average wind speed was 4.2 mph, while the highest wind speed was 30 mph on the 29th from a northeasterly direction.

Anchorage August 2016

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature in August of 60.5°F, 3.9°F above the long term mean. The highest temperature for the month was 77°F on the 28th, which also set a new record for that day, smashing the 1974 record of 70°F. Four other daily records were also set: on the 27th a temperature of 73°F was recorded, breaking the old 1993 record by 4°F, on the 29th the high was 72°F, breaking the old 2007 record by 2°F, then on the 30th a temperature of 74°F was observed, breaking the old 1974 record by 1°F. Finally, the high of 71°F on the 31st tied the 1963 record. The lowest temperature for the month was 44°F on the 31st.

Precipitation was 168% of normal, with 5.45” of precipitation measured, 2.20” over the normal 3.25”. Driving this high precipitation were three new daily record rainfalls. On the 4th a total of 0.76" fell, just topping the 2010 record of 0.75". Then on the 8th the 1.06" of rain broke the 1971 record of 0.79". Finally, the total of 1.02" on the 22nd broke the 0.60" record from 1953. The average wind speed was 5.6 mph while the highest wind speed was 40 mph on the 6th from a southeasterly direction.

Barrow August 2016

August’s mean monthly temperature for Barrow was 39.7°F, 0.7°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 64°F on the 27th, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old 1929 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature was 30°F on both the 4th and 19th.

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 0.84” measured, and 1.05” expected. Snowfall, however, was heavier than normal with 2.2” of snow measured, and 0.9” expected. The average wind speed was 12.6 mph, while the highest wind speed was 38 mph on the 18th, blowing from a southwesterly direction.

Delta Junction August 2016

Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of 59.0°F this August, 4.2°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 76°F on the 6th, while the lowest temperature was 34°F on the 31st.

Precipitation was less than normal, with 1.07” measured, and 1.89” expected.

Juneau August 2016

The mean monthly temperature for Juneau in August was 58.5°F, 2.6°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 76°F on the 27th, which also set a record for that day, breaking the old 1941 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature was 43°F on the 31st.

Precipitation was slightly higher than normal with 5.97” measured, just 0.24” above normal. The average wind speed was 6.7 mph, while the highest wind speed was 36 mph on the 14th, from a southeasterly direction.

Ketchikan August 2016

Ketchikan had a mean monthly temperature of 62.0°F this August, 4.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month occurred on both the 6th and 7th at 77°F, while the lowest temperature was 49°F on the 16th.

Precipitation was just 36% of normal, with 3.57” measured and 9.81” expected.

King Salmon August 2016

King Salmon’s August mean monthly temperature was 59.5°F, 4.9°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 77°F on the 31st. This set a record for that day, breaking the old 1942 record by 3°F. Another high daily record was set just the previous day, on the 30th, where a temperature of 74°F was observed, breaking the record for that day, also set in 1942, by 6°F. in addition, the high of 76°F on the 27th tied the 1987 record. In an unusual occurrence the lowest temperature for the month also occurred on the 31st, at 40°F.

Precipitation was 164% of normal, with 4.84” measured and 2.95” expected. The highest wind speed was 42 mph on the 17th from an easterly direction, while the average wind speed was 7.8 mph.

Kodiak August 2016

The mean monthly temperature for Kodiak in August was 58.9°F, 3.7°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 78°F on the 29th, which set a record for that day, breaking the old 2007 by 8°F. Three other records were set: on the 27th the 73°F observed broke the 1937 record by 1°F, on the 28th the 74°F observed broke the old 1942 record by 1°F, and on the 31st the 73°F observed broke the old 1990 record by 2°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 45°F occurring on the 31st.

Precipitation was lighter than normal, just 72% of the 4.56” expected, with 3.28” measured. The highest wind speed was 34 mph on the 21st from a southeasterly direction, while the average wind speed was 7.1 mph.

Nome August 2016

Nome had a mean monthly temperature this August of 53.6°F, 3.5°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 72°F on the 31st, which set a new record for that day, breaking the old 1978 record by 6°F. On the previous day, the 30th, a high of 67°F was observed, setting a record for that day, by breaking the previous 1970 record by 3°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 35°F on the 25th.

Precipitation was near normal, with 3.03” measured, just 0.19” lower than the normal of 3.22”. The average wind speed was 7.7 mph while the highest wind speed was 34 mph on the 22nd from a northerly direction.
