Fairbanks January 2015

In January Fairbanks observed a mean monthly temperature of -6.5°F, 1.4°F above the -7.9°F normal. The highest temperature for the month was 31°F occurring on the 15th, while the coldest was -43°F occurring on both the 26th and 27th.

Precipitation was light, with only 0.15" observed, 0.43" below the expected 0.58" normal. Similarly snowfall was only 55% of normal, with 4.6" of snowfall observed, compared to the 10.3" expected. Mean snow depth however was closer to normal, with 11" measured or 73% of normal.

Anchorage January 2015

Anchorage's mean monthly temperature for January was 19.4°F, 2.3°F above the normal of 17.1°F. The highest temperature for the month was 46°F on the 13th, while the lowest was -5°F on the 25th.

 

Precipitation was 0.37" for the month, 0.36" less than the expected 0.73. Snowfall was also lighter than normal, with only 52% of the 11.3" normally expected, with 5.9" of snowfall measured. Similarly mean snow depth was only 5", half the normal amount. The average wind speed was 4.5 mph and the highest wind speed was 35 mph blowing from a southeasterly direction on the 23rd.

Barrow January 2015

The mean monthly temperature for Barrow's was recorded at -10.3°F, 3.1°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 18°F on the 30th, while the lowest was -30°F on the 28th.

 

Precipitation was double the normal amount, with 0.26" observed. Snowfall was also heavier than normal with 4.6" of snowfall observed, 2.0" above normal. Contributing to both the increased precipitation and snowfall were two daily records set, on the 21st, the 2.0" of snow observed broke the old record for that day from 1991 by 0.9", and also on that day the snow water equivalent of snowfall of 0.07" broke the old 1991 precipitation record for that day by 0.02". The mean snow depth was 6", 3" below the 9" that was expected. The average wind speed was 13.3 mph, while the highest was 43 mph on the 30th coming from a southwesterly direction.

Delta Junction January 2015

Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of 1.7°F, 2.7°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month occurred on the 16th, with a temperature of 42°F recorded, while the lowest temperature was -45°F on the 26th.

 

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 0.18" observed, 0.13" below the normal of 0.31".

Juneau January 2015

Juneau was warmer than normal this January, with an observed monthly mean temperature of 35.1°F, 6.8°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 48°F on the 22nd, also setting a record for that day, breaking the old one, set last year, by 1°F. Juneau also tied the daily record high on the 25th with 44°F, last set in 1983. The lowest temperature was 13°F on the 5th.

 

Precipitation was over double the expected value of 5.35", with 11.98" recorded, setting a record for the month, breaking the old January precipitation record, set in 1939 by 1.81". Contributing to this were three new daily records set: on the 1st, 1.38" were recorded, breaking the 1985 record by 0.65", then on the 20th 1.23" fell, breaking the 1948 record by 0.03", and finally on the 21st 1.98" of precipitation was recorded, breaking the old 1988 record by 0.65". Snowfall, however, was much lighter than normal, with 15.1" of snowfall observed, 12.6" less than the 27.7" expected, partially due to the warmer temperatures. Average snow depth was 2", 5" less than normal. The average wind speed was 9.1 mph, while the highest wind speed of 49 mph blowing from the southeast occurring on the 21st.

Ketchikan January 2015

Ketchikan's January temperature was 6.4°F above normal, with 41.3°F observed for the month. The highest temperature for the month was 52°F on the 24th, while the lowest temperature was 19°F observed on the 5th.

 

A whopping 31.01" of precipitation was measured for the month, slightly over double the 15.40" normally expected. Contributing to the massive amount of precipitation was the 5.56" that were observed on the 20th, which broke the record for that day, set in 1948, by 1.42" The following day, 4.68" were measured, breaking the 1926 record for the 21st by 1.21".

King Salmon January 2015

The monthly mean temperature of King Salmon was 21.1°F, 4.9°F above the normal of 16.2°F. The highest temperature for the month was 48°F on the 8th, which also broke the record for that day set in 1955 by 4°F. Another record on the following day was set, the 45°F observed for the day breaking the old 1955 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature was -12°F on the 25th.

 

Precipitation was 0.52" for the month, 0.50" less than normal, hence snowfall was also light, with just a mere 7% of the 10.2" expected, with 0.7" measured for the month. The average wind speed was 11.3 mph, while the greatest wind speed was 48 mph from an easterly direction on the 8th.

Kodiak January 2015

Kodiak had a mean monthly temperature of 36.3°F this January, 5.8°F above the expected 30.5°F. The highest daily temperature was 45°F occurring on both the 8th and 12th, while the lowest occurred on the 25th at 17°F.

 

Precipitation was heavier than normal with 10.13" observed for the month, 122% of the 8.29" normal. Snowfall however, was lighter than normal with just 4.2", 32% of the 13.0" normal. The average wind speed was 12.7 mph, while the highest wind speed was 57 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 14th

Nome January 2015

Nome's mean monthly temperature for January was 9.2°F, 4.0°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 40°F on the 12th. On the 9th, the 35°F observed set a new record for that day, breaking the old 1937 record by 1°F. The lowest temperature for the month was -28°F on the 26th.

 

Precipitation was less than normal with 0.71" observed for the month, 0.23" below the normal of 0.94" normal. Snowfall was also less than normal with 10.4" measured for the month, 2.3" less than normal. However on the 16th, 4.0" of snow was observed, breaking the old record for that day by 0.1", set in 1995. Mean snow depth was 11", just 73% of normal. The average wind speed was 8.0 mph, while the highest wind speed was 43 mph on the 13th, from a northeasterly direction.
