Fairbanks May 2015

Fairbanks' mean monthly temperature was recorded as 55.3°F, 5.9°F above the normal 49.4°F. This is the second warmest May observed in Fairbanks ' climate history of more than a century. The mean maximum temperature for the month was 69.2°F, breaking the record for the month by 1.6°F, with the old record set in 1995. The highest temperature for the month was 86°F on the 23rd, which also set a record for that day, breaking the 2002 record by 6°F. One more daily high record was set; on the 17th, the 77°F observed broke the 1923 record for the day by 1°F. The coldest temperature for the month was 28°F which occurred on the 6th.

 

The 0.29” of precipitation that were measured for the month was just 48% of the expected amount. There was no recorded snowfall, while 0.9” is the normal long-term amount. The highest wind speed was 30 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 16th, while the average wind speed was 4.7 mph.

Anchorage May 2015

Anchorage's mean monthly temperature for May was 49.9°F, 2.1°F above the long-term mean of 47.8°F. The highest temperature for the month was 72°F on the 31st, while the coldest was 33°F, occurring four times during the month: on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th.

 

The precipitation for the month was just 0.46", 0.26" below average. No snowfall was observed; the long term normal is a low 0.3". The mean wind speed was 6.2 mph, while the highest wind speed was 45 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 15th.

Barrow May 2015

May's mean monthly temperature for Barrow was recorded at 28°F, 6.9°F above normal. This is also tied for the highest mean monthly temperature, sharing the record with 1991. The highest temperature was 47°F on the 21st, which broke the daily record for that day, set in 2011, by 6°F. Three more daily record highs events were recorded: first on the 17th, the high of 38°F tied the old record from 1923, then on the 18th the 41°F that was observed broke the 1963 record for that day by 2°F, and the following day, the 19th, the 46°F that was recorded shattered the 2009 recorded by 8°F. The coldest temperature for the month was 4°F on the 1st.

 

Precipitation was heavier than normal with 0.65" measured for the month, 0.47" more than normal. This makes 2015 the third wettest May on record for Barrow. Slightly more than half of this precipitation fell on the 25th, with 0.34" measured which set the record for that day, smashing the 0.06" that set the old record in 1967. This total was also the highest one-day precipitation for any day in May. The previous record was 0.30” from May 15th, 2014. On the 16th, the 0.09" that was recorded broke the previous record for that day by 0.05", set back in 1963. The average wind speed for the month was 11.6 mph, while the highest wind speed was 38 mph from an easterly direction on the 15th.

Delta Junction May 2015

Delta Junction's mean monthly temperature was a substantial 7.7°F above the long-term mean, with a temperature of 55.3°F recorded. This also set a record for the highest mean monthly temperature, breaking the 1981 record by 1.1°F. Additionally the mean maximum temperature for the month was 66.6°F, breaking the 1942 record by 0.6°. The highest temperature for the month was 82°F on the 23rd, which tied the record from 1960. The coldest temperature was 30°F on the 1st.

 

Other daily high records events were: on the 15th the 73°F observed broke the old 2004 record for that day by 3°F, and then on the 18th the high of 75°F tied the 1993 record. Finally, on the 19th, the high of 74°F broke the 2002 record for that day by 2°F.

 

Precipitation was much lighter than normal with 0.04” recorded, compared to the 0.90" expected for the month; this was the third driest May on record for Delta Junction.

Juneau May 2015

May’s mean monthly temperature for Juneau was recorded at 54.1°F, 5.5°F above the long-term mean of 48.6°F, setting the record for highest mean monthly temperature, breaking the 52.7°F record set in 2005. Additionally the mean maximum temperature for the month was 65.7°F, breaking the 2005 record by 2.2°F. Juneau also had 13 days with a high temperature greater than or equal to 70°F, five more than the previous May record, set in 2010.

 

The highest temperature for the month was 77°F, occurring on both the 29th and 30th, and on the latter, a new record was set for that day, breaking the 1964 record by 2°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 32°F occurring on the 5th.

 

Precipitation was just 15% of the normal amount, with 0.52” measured, and 3.40” expected. This low precipitation resulted in the driest May on record, with the old record set in 2004 at 0.84”. The average wind speed was 5.9 mph, while the highest was 32 mph blowing from an easterly direction on the 4th.

Ketchikan May 2015

The mean monthly May temperature for Ketchikan was recorded at 54.9°F, 6.3°F above the long-term mean. The highest temperature for the month was 75°F on the 17th, while the lowest was 32°F on the 3rd. Despite no new daily temperature record being set this May, this was the warmest mean monthly temperature on record, breaking the old 1993 record of 53.5°F.

 

The precipitation for May was just 8% of its normal, with a mere 0.68” measured, and 8.20” normally expected. This makes 2015 the driest May on record for Ketchikan. The previous record was 2.12” from 2010.

King Salmon May 2015

King Salmon’s monthly mean temperature was 3.7°F above normal, with a mean of 47.9°F. The highest temperature for the month occurred on the 30th at 73°F, while the lowest, 31°F, occurred on the 2nd.

 

Precipitation was heavier than normal, with 3.32” for the month measured, 266% of the long-term normal of 1.25”. This was also the highest precipitation for May on record, breaking the old 1941 record by 0.12”. Contributing to this were two daily precipitation records: on the 3rd 0.61” of precipitation was measured, breaking the 1947 record for that day by 0.16”, and then on the 14th, 0.55” was measured, breaking the 1989 record for that day by 0.09”. No snowfall was measured, while 0.8” is the long-term normal. The average wind speed was 10.0 mph, while the highest wind speed was 44 mph on the 13th blowing from a southeasterly direction, and on the 16th, also blowing from a southeasterly direction.

Kodiak May 2015

Kodiak’s mean monthly temperature for May was 47.0°F, 2.7°F over the long-term mean. The highest temperature for the month was 67°F occurring on the 30th, while the lowest was 32°F on the 2nd.

 

6.03” of precipitation were measured for May, 107% of the long-term normal. Further, on the 14th, 1.47” of precipitation was measured, breaking the old 2008 record of 1.14” for that day. No snowfall was recorded for the month. The average wind speed for the month was 9.9 mph, while the fastest wind speed was 39 mph, blowing from a westerly direction on the 8th.

Nome May 2015

May’s mean monthly temperature in Nome was recorded as 41.1°F, 4.3°F over the long-term mean of 36.8°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 22°F occurring on both the 1st and the 3rd, while the highest was a nice 71°F on the 31st.

 

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 1.49°F measured, 173% of the normal amount. No snowfall was measured for the month, while 2.3” is the long-term normal. The average wind speed was 8.9 mph while the greatest wind speed was 36 mph occurring on the 20th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.
