InBig Delta the mean temperature for September (47.4°F) was a substantial 3.5°F above the long-term normal of 43.9°F. The highest temperature (66°F) was observed on the 16thand 19th, while the lowest temperature dropped below freezing (25°F), and occurred relatively early in the month on the 11th. Temperatures were mixed in regard to the expected trend, with cooler temperatures during the first half, and warmer temperatures in the second half. Correlating to that trend were the daily temperature record events, with the low on the 11thof 25°F tying the record from 1992. Then on the 19ththe record high of 66°F from 1995 was tied.
Precipitation was reported at a total of 0.12", a meager 12% of the expected amount (1.03").
Anchorage was slightly cooler than normal in September, with an average temperature of 47.9°F, 0.7°F below the expected temperature. The maximum temperature (65°F) occurred on the 22nd, while the minimum temperature (29°F) occurred on the 30th. September temperatures started out normal, then alternated form cold to warm as storms impacted the region.
Precipitation was heavy at 6.49", 117% above the normal of 2.99". First measureable snowfall occurred on the 29thwith 0.2" at the airport. Up to 7" was measured on the hillside, and this was an early first snowfall, which normally does not occur until October 17th. The average wind speed was 8.5 mph, while the strongest gust of 58 mph was observed on the 4th, blowing from a southeasterly direction. High gusts were also record on the 5that 55 mph and on the 22ndat 50 mph.
The average temperature inJuneau for September was 49.6°F, 0.4°F below the long term mean. The maximum temperature of the month was 61°F, occurring on the 4thand 21st, while the minimum was 38°F and occurred on the 19thand 30th. Temperatures stayed normal for most of the month, with little daily variation due to the high amount of cloudiness.
Trace amounts of precipitation, or greater, fell on twenty-nine days of the month hence the total was higher than normal at 11.02", this is 2.38" above the expected amount of 8.64". While no new daily precipitation records were set, more than one inch fell on three days of the month, and the total made this the 10thwettest September on record. The average wind speed was 8.8 mph, and the maximum wind speed of 44 mph occurred on the 26th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.
The average temperature inJuneau for August was 54.6°F, 1.3°F below the long term mean. The maximum temperature of the month was 72°F, occurring on the 14th, while the minimum was a cool 38°F and occurred on the 30th. Temperatures started cool at the beginning of the month with little daily variation due to the soggy weather, but warmer temperatures occurred at the middle and end of the month.
Precipitation fell on twenty-one days of the month hence the total was higher than normal at 7.59", this is 1.86" above the expected amount of 5.73". On the 8thof August, 1.21" of rain fell, just breaking the previous record for that day (1.18") set in 2002. Then on the 28tha total of 1.28" of precipitation was measured, surpassing the 1988 record of 0.76". The average wind speed was 5.3 mph, and the maximum wind speed of 30 mph occurred on the 8th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.
Ketchikan reported slightly colder than average temperatures, with a mean temperature of 57.5°F, -0.5°F under the long-term mean of 58.0°F. The maximum temperature for the month was 75°F, which occurred on the 17th, while the minimum (45°F) was reported on the 30th.
Precipitation was significantly lower thannormal, reporting 5.68", or just 58% of the long term mean of 9.81".
Barrow experienced the fifth month in a row with above normal temperatures. The mean value was 45.3°F, a very substantial deviation of 6.3°F above the normal of 39.0°F, and higher than the July 2012 value of 44.0°F. The highest temperature (66°F) occurred on the 19th, and this is a new daily record. The previous record was 63°F set in 1923 and then tied in 1954. The daily temperature maximum was tied on the 22ndat 63°F. The previous record was set in 1972. The lowest temperature (29°F) was reported on the 11th. This matched the low temperature from July. In another indication of the extreme warmth of August 2012, six new daily high minimum temperature records were set between the 14thand 22nd.
Precipitation in Barrow (1.09") was slightly above the normal value of 1.05", while the snowfall (trace amount) was less than the normal value of 0.9". The average wind speed was 12.1 mph, while the maximum gust (41 mph) occurred on the 5th, blowing from a southerly direction.
Nome had a mean temperature for August of 49.2°F, 0.9°F below the normal value of 50.1°F. The maximum temperature was reported at 71°F on the 11th. The minimum temperature for the month was observed on the 20thand stayed above freezing at 35.0°F.
In July, Nome had nearly three times the normal amount of precipitation. August also had above normal rainfall with a total of 5.35". This is 2.13" over the normal amount of 3.22". Helping contribute to this high total was a record precipitation event on the 18th, when 1.06" fell, breaking the previous record of 0.95" set back in 1973. The average monthly wind speed was 8.1 mph, while the max wind speed was 44 mph, and occurred on the 24th of the month, blowing on the from a southwesterly direction.
InKing Salmon the average temperature was 53.0°F, 1.6°F below the long term mean, and warmer than the July 2012 mean of 52.3°F. The maximum temperature (73°F) for the month was reported on the 12th, while the minimum temperature occurred on the 28thand just hit freezing at 32°F.
King Salmon had a lower than normal amount of precipitation with a total of 2.64", 0.31" below the long-term mean. The average wind speed was 7.8 mph, and the highest gust of 51 mph occurred on the 18thblowing from a southerly direction.
Kodiak was cooler than normal, having a mean temperature of 53.7°F, 1.5°F less than the expected mean of 55.2°F. The maximum temperature for the month (69°F) was observed on the 26th, and the minimum temperature was 40°F, reported on the 22nd. The low temperature of 41.0°F on the 18thset a new daily record minimum temperature for that day, breaking the record of 42°F set previously in 1985.
Precipitation was 30% below normal with a total of 3.18", 1.38" under the normal amount of 4.56". The average wind was 6.9 mph, while the highest wind gust occurred on the 27that 44 mph, blowing from a westerly direction.
