Kodiak's average temperature of 39.5°F in April was 1.9°F above the long term mean. The highest temperature measured was 59°F on the 25th, while the low temperature of 28°F occurred on the 3rd, 4thand 7th. The maximum temperature of the 25threpresents a new maximum for this day, surpassing the old maximum of 57°F set in 1990. Furthermore, the temperature of 56°F on the 20this also a new daily maximum. The old record of 55°F was originally set way back in 1936.
Monthly precipitation was measured at 3.99", 69% of the expected amount of 5.81". The monthly average wind speed was calculated as 11.0 mph, and on the 14tha gust of 41 mph was recorded, blowing from a northeasterly direction.
In Big Delta the mean April temperature was 37.7°F, a substantial 5.5°F above the long term mean. The highest monthly temperature of 57°F was observed on the 17th, while the minimum temperature (-4°F) occurred on the 4th. The temperature of 52°F of the 13thmatched the old record high for this day set in 1978 and 1943, while two days later the temperature of 56°F established a new maximum, surpassing the values from 1970 and 1965 by 1°F.
Precipitation in April was reported as 0.11" water-equivalent, slightly less than half of the expected amount of 0.23".
Anchorage recorded an average temperature of 38.8°F, 2.0°F above the normal of 36.8°F. This was a pleasant change from March, for which monthly the mean temperature was substantially below normal. The maximum temperature of the month occurred on the 25thand 27th, both with 58°F, while a minimum temperature of 21°F was observed on the 3rd. For the whole month the temperature followed the expected trend fairly closely.
Precipitation was reported at 0.50" water-equivalent, which is slightly above the normal of 0.47". The average cloudiness was 60% and the mean monthly wind speed was calculated at 5.1 mph. Peak wind speeds were missing for about half of the month, but on the 14tha gust of 63 mph was reported, blowing from a southeasterly direction.
In Juneau , the average temperature was 41.8°F, 1.0°F above the normal for April. The maximum temperatures for the month (62°F) occurred on the 12thand the minimum temperature (20°F) was recorded on the 1st. The temperature of the 12thalso set a new record, surpassing the old record for this day set in 2003 by a substantial 5°F. On the 16ththe old record of 56°F, set in 2010, 2001 and 1996, was broken by 1°F. Then on the 18ththe previous maximum of 59°F, set in 1993, was matched.
Precipitation totaled 1.68" water-equivalent, 43% below normal. Despite the low overall precipitation, the 0.67" of rain on the 29thwas a new record, breaking the old record of 0.52", set in 1996. The mean monthly wind speed was 6.4 mph, with a maximum gust of 55 mph occurring on 20thblowing from ESE. Furthermore, mean cloudiness was high with 70%.
Ketchikan's average temperature of 43.7°F in April was 1.2°F above the long-term mean. Generally, the temperature was close to normal for most of the month. The highest temperature of the month measured 57°F, which occurred both on the 9thand 25th, while the low temperature of 31°F occurred on the 4th, 5thand 24thof the month.
Monthly precipitation was measured at 7.98", fairly close to the normal of 9.38", with a deviation of -15%. Remarkably, 1.71" of rain, 21% of the total precipitation, fell on the 20thof the month.
Barrow reported an average temperature in April of 4.6°F, 2.8°F above normal. The month was fairly close to the expected values, with the exception of the middle of the month, which was warmer than usual. On the 15th, the maximum temperature of 20°F was reported, while the lowest temperature of -24°F was observed on the 1st. No new temperature records were observed during the month.
Precipitation in Barrow totaled 0.17", slightly above the long term mean of 0.16". The mean monthly wind speed was 10.2 mph and a gust of 37 mph occurred on the 5th, blowing from an easterly direction.
Nome reported a mean monthly temperature in April of 20.4°F, very close to the normal of 20.5°F. The warmest monthly temperature was 43°F observed on the 24th, while the coldest temperature occurred on the 4thwith an unpleasant -13°F.
Precipitation totaled 0.33", less than half of the normal value of 0.76" water-equivalent. The average wind speed for the month was light with 5.4 mph, and the highest gust observed was 43 mph on the 8thblowing from an easterly direction.
InBig Delta the mean March temperature was 7.1°F, somewhat higher than the temperature of Fairbanks, and -7.0°F below the long term mean for March. It is believed this is caused by the more frequent occurrences of Chinook winds, which bring warmer than seasonally normal temperatures. This station is situated much closer to the Alaska Range, hence more affected by these winds. The highest monthly temperatures of 43°F was observed on the 29thand 30thMarch, while the minimum temperature (-28°F) occurred on the 5th. No new records were set during the month.
Precipitation in March was reported as 0.27" water-equivalent, 50% above the normal of 0.18 " for the month.
Anchorage recorded an average temperature of 21.4°F, 5.2°F below the normal of 26.6°F. This is a remarkable change from February, during which month the mean temperature was higher than March's mean temperature. The maximum temperature of the month occurred on the 29thand once again on the 31stwith 47°F, while a minimum temperature of 0°F was observed on the 12thof March. The observed temperatures were below normal for the month with the exception of the last week, which was seasonally warmer than normal no new daily records were set during the month.
Precipitation was reported at 0.63" water-equivalent, only slightly above the normal of 0.60". As expected, snowfall gave similar proportions. 9.5" were measured for the month, close to the normal of 9.9". On the 3rd, 3.3" snow fell, the highest amount for the month, but it was not a new record for the day. The average cloudiness was 70% and the mean monthly wind speed was calculated as 3.8 mph. Data for peak wind speeds were missing for most of the month.
