Fairbanks had a mean monthly temperature of 3.5°F this January, 11.4°F above the normal -7.9°F. The highest temperature for the month was 36°F on the 2nd, while the lowest was -20°F on the 16th.

Precipitation was exceptionally light with 0.01" measured, while 0.58" is normally expected. This ties January 1996 for the lowest January precipitation on record (using a 110 year record). Snowfall was just 8% of normal, with 0.8" measured and 10.3" expected. This is the second lightest January snowfall on record after the 0.7" from 1966. The average wind speed was 3.2 mph while the highest wind speed was 23 mph, from a northerly direction on the 19th.

Anchorage January 2016

Anchorage had a mean monthly temperature of 27.0°F in January, 9.9°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 41°F on both the 5th and 27th while the lowest temperature was 10°F on 15th.

Precipitation was lighter than normal, with 0.28" measured and 0.73" expected. Snowfall was also much lighter than normal, with just 3.5" observed, 7.8" less than normal. The average wind speed was 5.2 mph while the highest wind speed was 43 mph on the 2nd, from a southeasterly direction.

Barrow January 2016

January mean monthly temperature for Barrow was -0.3°F, a whopping 13.1°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 28°F on the 6th, while the lowest was -24°F on the 22nd.

Precipitation was slightly higher than normal, with 0.30" measured, 0.13" above normal. Snowfall was also higher than normal, with 4.5" observed, 1.9" above normal. The highest wind speed was 38 mph on the 27th from an easterly direction, while the average wind speed was 14.3 mph.

Delta Junction January 2016

In January Delta Junction had a mean monthly temperature of 15.7°F, 1.0°F below the normal of 16.7°F. The highest temperature for the month was 41°F on 2nd, but the 39°F on the 3rd set a record for that day, breaking the old record of 36°F set in 2013. The lowest temperature for the month was -8°F occurring on the 21st.

Precipitation was less than normal, with 0.05" measured, and 0.31" expected.

Juneau January 2016

Juneau's mean monthly temperature for January was 34.9°F, 6.6°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 47°F on the 27th, which also broke a record for that day by 1°F, originally set in 1961. The previous day, the 26th, also set a record high for that day with a temperature of 45°F, breaking the old 2011 record of 43°F. The lowest temperature for the month was 16°F on the 8th.

Precipitation was 1.18" higher than normal for the month, with 6.53" measured and 5.35" expected. Contributing to this was the 0.87" that fell on the 26th, which broke the old 2009 record for that day of 0.66". However, there were only trace measurements of snowfall, while a heavy 27.7" is normally expected. This ties with the January 1942 record low snowfall of just a trace. The average wind speed was 6.7 mph, while the highest was 59 mph on the 26th from a southeasterly direction.

Ketchikan January 2016

The January mean monthly temperature for Ketchikan was 40.2°F, 5.3°F above normal. The highest temperature for the month was 52°F on the 26th, while the lowest was 23°F on the 6th. On the 25th a high temperature of 51°Fwas recorded, breaking the old record for that day, set in 1998, by 1°F.

Precipitation was higher than normal with 16.48" observed, and 15.40" expected. Contributing to this was the 3.84" that fell on the 25th, which shattered the old record for that day of 1.85", set back in 2011.

King Salmon January 2016

The mean monthly temperature for King Salmon this January was 32.4°F, an extreme 16.2°F above the normal of 16.2°F. The highest temperature for the month was 45°F occurring on the 4th, which broke the daily record for that day, set in 1995, by 2°F and on the 31st. The lowest temperature was 10°F occurring on three separate days: the 13th, 14th, and 21st.

Precipitation was less than half of normal with 0.48" measured and 1.02" expected. Snowfall was a mere 6% of normal, with 0.6" measured and 10.2" normal. The average wind speed was 13.1 mph while the highest wind speed was 49 mph on the 1st from an easterly direction.

Kodiak January 2016

Kodiak had a mean monthly temperature of 36.4°F, 5.9°F above normal, this January. The highest temperature for the month was 44°F on the 28th while the lowest was 18°F on the 14th.

Precipitation was higher than normal, with 10.41" measured, and 8.29" normal. Snowfall however was slight, at just 1% of normal, with 0.1" measured and 13.0" expected. The highest wind speed was 65 mph on the 1st from an easterly direction while the average wind speed was 15.8 mph.

Nome January 2016

Nome had a mean monthly temperature of 20.2°F this January, a whopping 15.0°F above the normal of 5.2°F. The highest temperature for the month was 38°F on the 4th, while the lowest was -13°F on both the 23rd and 24th.

Precipitation was less than normal with 0.53" measured and 0.94" expected. Snowfall was also lighter than normal, at just 65% of the normal 12.7", with 8.2" measured. Despite this however, the 2.5" that fell on the 29th broke the record, at 1.6", for that day set in 2008. The average wind speed was 13.3 mph while the highest was 49 mph on the 9th from a northeasterly direction.
