April's mean monthly temperature for Anchorage was observed at 40.7°F, 3.9°F above the long term normal of 36.8°F normal. The highest temperature measured this month was 58°F on the 26th, while the lowest was 25°F on the 14th. While no new daily record temperatures were set, on the 7th the daily record high temperature of 50°F from 1995 was tied.
Precipitation was slightly higher than normal with 0.66" of precipitation measured, 0.19" above the expected amount. Snowfall was near normal, with 4.4" of snow recorded, 110% of the 4.0" normal. The average wind speed was 7.4 mph, while the greatest wind speed was 44 mph on the 19th, from a southeasterly direction.
Barrow had a monthly mean temperature for April 4.9°F above normal, with an observed temperature of 6.7°F. The warmest temperature for this month was 29°F occurring on both the 23rd and 24th and the lowest was -13°F on the 15th.
There was more precipitation than normal this month, with 0.46" of precipitation measured, 0.30" above the 0.16" normally expected. The total of 0.19" that fell on the 22nd broke the daily record for that day, set in 1961, by 0.06". Snowfall, however, was much heavier than normal with 7.2" of snow 225% of the 3.2" normal. The highest wind speed was 42 mph on the 8th, blowing from a northeasterly direction, while the mean wind speed was 12.2 mph.
The monthly mean temperature in April for Delta Junction was 36.3°F, 4.1°F above the expected 32.2°F normal. The highest temperature for the month was 56°F occurring on both the 26th and 27th, while the lowest was 16°F on the 5th.
Precipitation was near normal with 0.22" measured, just 0.01" below normal. Almost half of this precipitation, 0.10", fell on the 11th, breaking the daily record for that day, set in 1948, by 0.01".
Juneau in April observed a monthly mean temperature of 41.9°F 1.1°F above the expected 40.8°F. The highest temperature observed for the month was 62°F on the 25th, while the lowest was 28°F on the 5th. The high temperature of 53°F on the 5th tied the daily record set in 1980 and 1941.
7.18" of precipitation was recorded this month, 244% of the 2.94" normal. Contributing to the higher amount of precipitation were the three daily precipitation records that were set: on the 8th 1.14" of precipitation was recorded, breaking the old 1960 record for the day by 0.48". On the 10th 0.72" were measured, breaking the 1994 daily record by 0.08", and finally on the 28th, 0.98" of precipitation was recorded, breaking the 1963 record for that day by 0.35". Due to the warmer temperatures, no precipitation fell as snow, while 1.1" of snow is normally observed. The mean wind speed was 10.5 mph, with a highest wind speed of 52 mph, from a southeasterly direction on the 28th.
Ketchikan observed a monthly mean temperature of 44.2°F, 1.7°F above the long-term mean of 42.5°F. The highest temperature for the month occurred on the 24th, at 60°F, while the lowest was just two days earlier on the 22nd, at 32°F.
April's precipitation was 180% of the 9.38" normally expected, with 16.90" of precipitation measured. Contributing to this heavy amount was the 2.85" that were recorded on the 9th, which broke the 1968 record for that day by 0.75".
The April monthly mean temperature for King Salmon was 36.1°F, 2.4°F above the normally expected mean. The highest temperature for the month was 60°F occurring on the 26th, while the lowest was 16°F measured on the 12th. The high temperature of 51°F on the 1st tied the record high for that day originally set back in 1934.
Precipitation was heavier than normal, with 2.18" of precipitation measured, 1.21" more than normal. On the 6th, 0.63" were measured, breaking the daily record for that day by 0.39", set in 1935. Snowfall was much heavier than normal, with 12.1" of snow measured, 310% of the 3.9" that is normal for the month. This was partly due to three daily record snowfall events set for the month; on the 7th, 2.5" of snow was measured, breaking the record for that day, set in 1931, by 0.5", then on the next day, the 8th, 4.5" of snow fell, shattering the record for that day by 1.8", previously set in 1975, and finally on the 9th, 3.8" of snow was measured, breaking the 1974 record for that day by 1.6". The average wind speed was 10.7 mph, while the highest wind speed was 42 mph on the 18th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.
Kodiak's mean monthly temperature for April was 40.0°F, 2.4°F above the long-term mean of 37.6°F normal. The highest temperature for the month was 58°F on the 28th, and a lowest temperature of 23°F on the 12th.
Precipitation was incredibly light for the month with a mere 0.69" of precipitation, just 12% of the 5.81" normally expected. Snowfall was also lighter than normal, with 4.4" of snow measured, or 55% of normal. The average wind speed was 11.6 mph, with a highest wind speed of 50 mph on the 17th blowing from an easterly direction.
The mean monthly temperature for Nome in April was 21.5°F, just 1.0°F above normal. The lowest temperature of the month occurred on the 1st, at -8.0°F, and the highest temperature was observed at 45°F on the 25th.
Precipitation was 0.15" lighter than normal with 0.61" observed. Snowfall however was near normal with 7.6" of snow measured just 0.1" lower than normal. The highest wind speed was 42 mph on the 5th, blowing from a northeasterly direction, while the average wind speed for the month was 7.7 mph.
March in Fairbanks was warmer than normal, with a recorded monthly mean of 15.5°F, 4.1°F above normal. The warmest temperature was 52°F on the 26th, which set a record for that day, breaking the 1970 record by 4°F, while the coldest -37°F on the 15th, almost 90°F colder than the highest temperature.
The precipitation for Fairbanks was higher than normal, with 0.49" recorded, 0.24" above the 0.25" that is expected. Snowfall was also higher than normal, with 8.1" measured, 165% of the normal 4.9". Over half of this snowfall, and nearly what is expected for the month, fell on the 7th, where 4.3" was measured, breaking the old 2012 record for that day by 1.6". Relatedly, the 0.28" water equivalent measured that day also broke the 2012 record for precipitation for the day by 0.11". The highest wind speed occurred on the 8th, measured at 30 mph from a westerly direction, while the average wind speed was just 1/10th of that, 3.0 mph.
