For Kodiak, the average monthly temperature of 49.2°F was close to the long-term mean of 49.6°F. The highest temperature of the month was 60°F on the 3rd, and the lowest was 32°F on the 29th. This was the first and only frost of the month. No temperature records were set in September. In general, the daily temperature ranges were very narrow for the first half of the month, and larger than expected for the second half. Mean wind speed was 8.3 mph, and the highest gust was 53 mph on the 5th. Monthly precipitation was heavy and totaled 15.49", more than twice the expected amount of 7.07". Precipitation, if even a trace amount, occurred on 28 days of the month. Three new daily precipitation records were set in September. The first one was set on the 2nd with 2.21", breaking the old record of 1.47" that had been in place since 1943. Then on the 5th, 1.59" of rain narrowly broke the 1982 record of 1.54". Finally, 12th saw a heavy 3.46" or rain, shattering the old total of 1.70" from 1979. This last record resulted in mudslide on the Chiniak Highway near Kodiak.
Big Delta reported a mean temperature of 47.8°F, which is 3.9°F above the long-term mean temperature for September. The high temperature of the month was observed on the 13th at 71°F, surpassing the maximum temperature recorded for August 2011 by 1°F. Furthermore, it was a new maximum daily record for this date, surpassing the old value of 67°F, which occurred both in 1965 and 1956. The low temperatures for the month occurred on the 26th and 29th at 30°F for both days. The 26th was also the first day of frost which is quite late in the season. Precipitation totaled 0.27", 74% below the expected amount. No new precipitation record events were set.
In Juneau, the average temperature was 48.8°F, somewhat (1.2°F) below normal for September. The maximum temperatures for the month (65°F) occurred on the 12th and the minimum temperature (33°F) occurred on the 25th September. No frost was observed during the month. Precipitation totaled 8.58", which is very close to the normal of 8.33". As might be deduced from the high precipitation amounts in the Southeast Alaska, sky cover was high, with no clear days, 8 partly cloudy days and 22 cloudy days. Average wind speed at Juneau Airport was 8.8 mph with the highest wind gust a substantial 71 mph on the 21st September.
Ketchikan's average temperature of 53.8°F in September was 1.3°F above the long-term mean. The highest temperature of the month measured 70°F on the 12th, while the low temperature of 40°F occurred on the 25th of the month. Even though the mean monthly temperature was somewhat above the expected value, the daily temperature ranges followed fairly closely the long-term means. No new temperature extremes were recorded. Monthly precipitation was heavy and totaled 28.33", slightly more than twice the expected amount of 13.79". Precipitation occurred on 28 days of the month. Of note was the 20th of the month, with a daily total of 5.00". Despite the heavy rainfall, no new precipitation records were set during the month.
Ketchikan'saverage temperature of 56.8°F in August was 1.2°F below the long-term mean. The highest temperature of the month measured 71°F on the 9th, while the low temperature of 44°F occurred on the 25thof the month. While the mean monthly temperature was somewhat below the expected value, nevertheless the daily temperature ranges followed fairly closely the long-term means. No new temperature extremes were observed.
Monthly precipitation was measured at 17.73", nearly twice the expected amount of 9.81". Remarkable were the precipitation events of the 20thand the 23rdof the month, with totals of 4.63" and 3.80", respectively, and setting new records for these days. The episode of the 20thsurpassed the old record of 3.38" previously set in 1956, while the rain of the 23rdtopped previous record of 3.13" from 1972. Many other stations in the Southeast Alaska reported also record rainfalls on the 20th.
Barrow reported an average temperature in August of 42.1°F, 3.2°F above normal, the highest positive deviation of the 8 cities reviewed for this summary. The maximum temperature occurred on the 5thwith 58°F, and the lowest temperature of 33°F was observed on the 25thof August it is also somewhat remarkable that no frost occurred during the month of August. In general, the temperatures during the most of the month were close to normal, with the exception of the beginning and the end, when above normal temperatures occurred. No new records were observed during August.
Precipitation in Barrow totaled 0.82", 22% below the normal value. No snow was observed during the month. The mean monthly wind speed was 11.4 mph and a gust of 37 mph occurred on the 4th.
Nome reported a mean monthly temperature in August of 48.0°F, a negative deviation of 2.1°F from the long term mean. The warmest monthly temperature was 70°F observed on the 19thof August, while the coldest temperature was a light frost (30°F), which occurred on the 28thof the month. No new temperature extremes were observed during July.
Precipitation was high, totaling 4.36", 35% above the expected amount. The rainfall of the 11thAugust set a new record for the day (1.21"), surpassing the old record of 1.05 set in 1958. The average wind speed for the month was 7.7 mph, and the highest gust observed was 37 mph on the 24th.
King Salmon reported an average temperature of 52.1°F, a substantial 2.5°F below the long term mean. The high temperature for August was 71°F, recorded on the 17thand the lowest temperature was 33°F on the 23rd. This latter value represents a new record low for this specific day. The old record had been 34°F set in 1969.
The precipitation total was measured as 3.99", surpassing the normal value of 2.95" by 1.04". On 25 days of August at least some rain was recorded. Average wind speed was 7.4 mph and the highest gust was recorded at 36 mph on the 19th.

While this latter value came close to the absolute minimum of 33°F observed in 1969, no new extreme temperatures were observed during this month.
Precipitation totaled 1.44", 24% below the expected amount. Just as for temperatures, no new precipitations records were set.
