Anchorage August 2014

Anchorage was near the normal temperature this August, with an observed monthly mean of 57.4°F, just 0.7°F above normal. The warmest temperature of the month was 71°F recorded on the 3rd, while the lowest temperature was 42°F on the last day of the month, the 31st.

Precipitation was lighter than normal with 2.60” of precipitation measured for the month, 80% of the 3.25” expected. The average wind speed was 5.6 mph, while the greatest wind gust was 38 mph on the 16th, from a southerly direction.

 

Barrow August 2014

 

 

 

Barrow’s monthly mean temperature for August was 1.3°F below normal, a mean of 37.7°F recorded. The highest temperature for the month was recorded toward the end of the month, on the 22nd, at 57°F, while the lowest occurred on the 29th, at 27°F.

Only 432% of the expected precipitation fell, with 0.45” observed. Snowfall was also less than normal, with 0.5” of snow recorded for the month, 0.4” less than normal. The fastest wind speed for the month was 43 mph from a northeasterly direction on the 7th, while the average wind speed was 14.6 for August

Delta Junction August 2014

This August Delta Junction had a monthly mean temperature of 56.3°F, 1.5°F above the normal of 54.8°F. The warmest temperature for the month occurred on the 11th at 75°F, while the coldest was 33°F on the 31st.

Precipitation was 0.60” above normal, with 2.49” of precipitation observed. 0.74” of this fell on the 18th breaking the 1941 record for that day by 0.04”.

Juneau August 2014

Juneau was warmer than normal with a monthly mean of 56.8°F observed, 0.9°F above the normal of 55.9°F. The 2nd and 3rd had the warmest temperature for the month, with 77°F observed on both days, while the lowest occurred on the 20th and 21st at 44°F.

Precipitation was 49% heavier than normal with a total of 8.53”. On the 9th 0.99” were recorded breaking the 1990 record for that day of 0.80”. The next day 1.53” of precipitation fell, breaking the 1944 record of 1.04”. The average wind speed was 8.2 mph, with a greatest wind speed of 34 mph from a southeasterly direction on the 17th.

Ketchikan August 2014

Ketchikan was 2.6°F above normal this August, with a monthly mean of 60.6°F. The warmest temperature for the month was 77°F on the 11th, while the coldest was 47°F on the 28th.

Precipitation was heavier than normal with 14.02” of precipitation observed, with 9.81” expected, ending up at 43% above normal. 32% of this rain fell on the 9th, with 4.50” measured, breaking the 1967 record for that day by 1.3”.

King Salmon August 2014

 

 

 

King Salmon had a monthly mean temperature of 57.2°F this August, which was 2.6°F above the normal of 54.6°F. The highest temperature for the month was 73°F on the 10th, while the lowest was 30°F on the 31st.

Precipitation was slightly above normal, with 3.51” of precipitation recorded, while 2.95” was expected, which ended up as 0.56” above normal. The average wind speed was 7.0 mph, with a greatest wind speed of 32 mph from an easterly direction occurring on the 16th.

Kodiak August 2014

 

 

 

Kodiak was 1.1°F above normal in August, with a monthly mean of 56.3°F observed. The highest temperature for the month was 69°F on both the 17th and 18th, while the lowest was 45°F on the 30th and 31st.

Precipitation was heavier than normal with 6.90” of precipitation recorded, 2.34” above normal. The highest wind speed was 36 mph from an easterly direction on the 15th, while the average wind speed was 7.2 mph.

Nome August 2014

August was much warmer than normal in Nome with a monthly mean of 55.7°F, 5.6°F above the expected 50.1°F. The highest temperature for the month was 77°F on the 11th, which also broke old record for that day, from 1960, by 5°F. The lowest temperature was 30°F on the 30th, finally dipping below freezing.

Precipitation was just 53% of normal, with only 1.71” observed while 3.22” was expected. The average wind speed was 7.4 mph, while the highest wind speed for the month was 32 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 31st.

Fairbanks July 2014

July for Fairbanks was slightly cooler than normal, a monthly mean of 61.0°F observed, 1.5°F below the 62.5°F normal. The highest temperature for the month was 87°F on the 6th, while the lowest was 39°F on the 26th

5.78" of precipitation was observed in July, 168% more than the normal of 2.16". It was the second wettest July on record for Fairbanks, just behind the 5.96" from 2003, and following a record wet June. Part of this was due to the 1.92" that fell on the 1st of the month, utterly smashing the 1935 record of 0.65" for the day. The average wind speed was 4.6 mph, while the greatest wind gust was 38 mph from a southwesterly direction on the 14th.
