In Fairbanks the average temperature was 28.9°F, a substantial (4.7°F) above October's long-term mean. This continues the above normal temperatures observed in September. The high temperature for the month was 57°F on the 2nd of October, while the lowest temperature of -2°F was observed on the last day of the month. Precipitation in October was 0.32" water equivalent, far below the expected value of 0.83". This deficit in precipitation can be also seen from the limited snowfall of 4.2" for the month, which is far below the mean value of 10.8". The combination of above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation made it a pleasant month. Wind speed averaged 2.5 mph and the highest gust was 32 mph on the 10th. No new temperature or precipitation records were recorded.
Anchorage recorded an average temperature of 36.8°F, 2°F above the long-term mean. The maximum temperature of the month occurred on the 3rd and 8th of October at 51°F, while a minimum temperature of 15°F was observed on the last day of the month. No new records were set, and the observed temperatures followed fairly closely the expected values. Precipitation was reported at 1.70", somewhat below the normal value of 2.03". The mean monthly cloudiness was relatively high (70%) and during the whole month only 2 clear day were observed. An average monthly wind speed of 5.4 mph was recorded and a top gust of 45 mph occurred on the 25th.
Barrow reported an average temperature in October of 22.8°F, far above the normal of 17.2°F. This value represents the continuing trend of far above normal temperature values of the last two months. A maximum temperature of 33°F occurred on the 1st, 3rd, and 8th, and a minimum temperature of 6°F was observed on the 9th, 10th, and 29th of October. Seasonally above normal temperatures occurred during the middle of the month. No new temperature extremes were observed during October. Precipitation in Barrow, which is low in Northern Alaska, totaled 1.13", far exceeding the normal value of 0.41" and 23.8" of snow fell, the greatest amount of 2.5" on the 4th October. Trace or more amounts of snow fell on 30 days of the month. The mean monthly wind speed was 15.2 mph and a gust of 44 mph occurred on the 16th.
Big Delta reported a mean temperature of 28.4°F, which is far above the long-term mean temperature of 24.1°F for October. The high temperature of the month was observed on the 2nd at 54°F, while the minimum of -3°F occurred on the last day of the month. Precipitation totaled 0.19" water-equivalent, far below the normal of 0.80" for the month, lower even than Fairbanks both in the total amount as well as the deviation from normal. No new temperature or precipitation records were observed.
In Juneau, the average temperature was 42.2°F, very slightly below the long-term mean of 42.4°F for October. The maximum temperatures for the month (53°F) occurred on the 1st and the minimum temperature (28°F) occurred on the 3rd October. Precipitation totaled 7.39", which is somewhat below the normal of 8.63". As might be deduced from the high precipitation totals found in the Southeast Alaska, sky cover averaged 90%, with no clear days, 4 partly cloudy days and 27 cloudy days. Average wind speed at Juneau Airport was 8.2 mph with a highest wind gust of a substantial 56 mph on the 25th October. No new daily temperature or precipitation records were observed.
Ketchikan's average temperature of 45.9°F in October was slightly (0.6°F) above the long-term mean. The highest temperature of the month measured 58°F on the 3rd, while the low temperature of 33°F occurred on the 14th of the month. The temperatures followed fairly closely the long-term mean and no new temperature extremes were observed. Monthly precipitation was measured at 24.13", above the expected amount of 19.22". Of note was the 29th of the month, with a total precipitation of 3.47".
King Salmon reported an average temperature of 37.6°F, substantially above the long-term mean of 33.5°F. The highest temperature in October was 53°F, recorded on the 1st and 4th of October. The low temperature of 20°F occurred on the 17th. No new temperature extremes were reported for the month. The precipitation total was measured as 3.25", far above the long-term mean of 1.17. On the 25th of October, 0.91" of precipitation were recorded, setting a new record. The old record of 0.54" for this specific day was set in 2004. 6.5" of snow was reported for the month, more than half of it (3.4") fell on the last day of the month. Average wind speed was 7.9 mph and the highest gust was recorded at 55 mph on the 14th.
Kodiak reported for October an average temperature of 41.9°F. The maximum temperature for the month occurred on the 4th with 54°F, while the lowest temperature happened on the 19th with 24°F. The mean monthly temperature was somewhat (1.4°F) above the long-term mean, but temperatures followed fairly closely the expected values. Precipitation was reported as 5.21", about 1/3 below the long-term value. The mean wind speed for the month is 8.2 mph and on the 25th of the month a gust of 63 mph was recorded, the highest value for the month. The related storm did substantial damage, downing some power lines. In addition, roof on a building on Mill Bay Road was blown off.
Nome reported a mean monthly temperature in October of 28.0°F, a negative deviation of 0.7°F from the long-term mean. The warmest monthly temperature was 44°F, observed on the 14th of October, while the coldest temperature occurred on the 30th of the month with a value of 0°F. The temperatures were seasonally colder at the beginning and end of the month, while they were above normal for middle of the month. No new temperature extremes were observed during October. Precipitation was in the expected range, totaling 1.55", was very close to the mean value of 1.61". However, on the 12th a new record rainfall event occurred with 0.63". This broke the old record of 0.39" set way back in 1944. The average wind speed for the month was 6.5 mph, and the highest gust observed was 32 mph on the 13th.
