Kodiak was 1.4°F colder than normal in May, with an average temperature of 42.9°F. The highest temperature of the month was 61°F, observed on both the 28th and 29th. The coldest temperature for the month was observed on the 19th, at 28°F, which set a new minimum for that day, breaking the 30.0°F set in 2007. On the 18th, a minimum temperature of 30.0°F was observed, breaking the old record of 31.0°F for that day set in 1967 and 1975.
Precipitation was at 2.22" low, just 40% of the normal value of 5.62". Snowfall was slightly above normal, 0.9" were observed, 0.7" higher than the expected amount. The average monthly wind speed was 8.3mph, with the highest wind speed of 44 mph occurring on the 18th, blowing from a westerly direction.
In Nome the average temperature for the month was 31.1°F, 5.7°F below the long -term mean of 36.8°F. The maximum temperature for the month was recorded on the 30th, at 67°F, while the minimum was observed on the 4th, 14th, and 17th, at a chilly 8°F. The minimum observed on the 14th broke the daily minimum record of 10.0°F set in 1939. Further, on the 17th, the minimum was 1°F colder than the old record of 9°F for that day set in 1953.
Precipitation was above normal. 1.79" were recorded, over twice the expected amount of 0.86". On the 21st 0.81" of water equivalent precipitation was recorded, breaking the old record set in in 1960 of 0.55". Snowfall was also above normal, 10.8", a resounding 8.5" above the normal amount of 2.7". This was 0.8" higher than the previous record for monthly snowfall, set in 1977. On the 15th, a record amount of snow fell for that day, 1.9", double the amount of the old record set in 1976. On the 21st the daily record for snow on that day was broken, with 4.52" recorded, shattering the old record of 0.5" set back in 1990. The average wind speed for the month was 8.9mph, with the highest wind speed recorded on the 1st, at 39mph blowing from a northerly direction.
In Big Delta the mean temperature for May was 42.7°F, 4.9°F below the normal value of 47.6°F. The highest temperature for the month was observed on the 30th at 79°F, while the minimum temperature for the month was recorded on both the 13th and 18th at 19.0°F. Both days set the record minima for the days, while the 19th and 20th matched the old record lows.
The observed precipitation for the month was a mere 0.09", 10% of the long-term normal value.
Anchorage was in May cooler than normal, with a mean temperature of 45.0°F, or 2.8°F below the long-term mean of 47.8°F. The highest temperature for the month was observed on the 30th, at 69.0°F, while the coldest temperature was recorded toward the middle of the month on the 18th, a chilly 26°F.
Precipitation was over double the expected amount, at 1.53" of water-equivalent. This is 0.81" over the expected amount of 0.72". The above normal precipitation broke also two daily precipitation records. On the 4th 0.36" were recorded, breaking the 0.32" record of 1989 and on the 17th, the daily precipitation record was shattered, with 0.52" observed, compared to the 1959 record of 0.21". Snowfall was also above normal, 1.3" were recorded, over 3 times the long-term mean of 0.3". On the 4th, the daily snowfall for the day was 0.9", breaking the 0.4" recorded in both 2001 and 1975. The max wind speed occurred on the 3rd, and was 39mph, blowing from the south. The average monthly wind speed was 5.8 mph.
Barrow reported a monthly mean May temperature of 22.7°F, which is above the normal value of 21.1°F. This continues the warming trend observed in Northern Alaska over the last decades. The warmest temperature for the month occurred on the 21st at 38°F, while the coldest temperature for the month was measured on the 5th, a chilly 1°F.
Precipitation for the month was observed at 0.40", over twice as much as the normal value of 0.18". Snowfall was also higher than expected, 5.4", exactly double the long -term average. The mean wind speed was 11.4mph, while the highest wind speed was observed on the 13th at 39mph, blowing from a northerly direction.
The average temperature in Juneau for May was only slightly cooler than the long term mean, at 48.0°F or a mere 0.6°F below the normal value. The maximum temperature for the month was observed on the 27th and 29th, at 68°F, while the coldest temperature for the month was recorded on the 7th and 20th, at 30°F.
The precipitation in Juneau was at 5.33" or 1.93" above the normal value. A daily record amount of precipitation was recorded on the 1st at 0.91", breaking the old record of 0.76" set in 1980. Similarly, on the 31st the recorded value of 1.10" broke the 1948 record of 0.91". The average wind speed was 8.2mph, with the maximum wind speed recorded at 50mph, coming from a southeasterly direction on the 1st.
Along with Barrow, Ketchikan was one of two stations that had a monthly mean May temperature (50.7°F) that was warmer than normal (48.6°F). The highest temperature of the month was observed on the 22nd, a pleasant 67°F, while the lowest temperature for the month was recorded on the May 1st, at 38°F.
The precipitation in Ketchikan was above normal this month, with 12.82" recorded, 56% more than the expected amount of 8.20". On the 1st of the month, the daily precipitation record set in 1980 was broken, 3.68" fell this day, a whole 1.67" higher than the previous record.
King Salmon was in May 1.7°F cooler than normal, with a mean temperature of 42.5. The highest temperature for the month was observed on the 29th, a warm 77°F, breaking the old record high of 75°F set in 2006. Further, on the 10th, a temperature of 63°F was recorded, 3°F higher than the record set in 1970. The middle of the month was much too cold. On the 14th the recorded minimum of 23°F broke the low of 25°F set in 1965 Further, on the 18th, a recorded minimum of 22°F was 5°F colder than the old low set in 1974. Finally, on the 19th a minimum temperature of 16°F shattered the old record of 26°F set back in 1964.
Precipitation was much lower than normal, 0.33" were recorded, or just 26% of the long term mean of 1.25". Snowfall however, matched the expected value of 0.8" exactly. The average wind speed for the month was 7.8mph, while the highest wind speed was recorded on the 21st, at 43mph from a southeasterly direction.
For Barrow, April had a below normal mean temperature with a value of 0.6°F, a deviation of 1.2°F below the normal of 1.8°F. Temperatures were varied throughout the month. The lowest temperature (-26°F) occurred on the 7th, while the highest temperature (28°F) was reported on the 23rd. Despite the general warming trend for Barrow, April, like February, marks another month where the mean monthly temperature for Barrow has had a negative deviation. Precipitation in Barrow (0.19") was 0.03" above normal value of 0.16". A total of 0.07" of water equivalent fell in the 27th, and tied the record from 1973. Snowfall was also above normal at 5.2", 2.0" above normal. Trace amounts or more of snow fell on 19 days during the month. The average wind speed was 11.0 mph, while the maximum gust (45 mph) occurred on the 22nd, blowing from a southwesterly direction.
