Nome May 2010

38.9°F was the average temperature in Nome during May, 1.8°F above normal. The mercury reached a high of 69°F on the 30th and a low of 19°F on the 6th.  On the 19th, a record high temperature of 65°F was reported, 1°F higher than the old record set in 1980.  Light snow activity was reported from the first through the 13th, but by the 14th there was no snow left on the ground.  Precipitation for the month was measured at 0.27", 36% below normal.  Winds averaged 6.3 mph at the airport and a high gust of 32 mph occurred on the 11th.

Fairbanks April 2010

Mild temperatures throughout April in Fairbanks hastened the snowmelt, which presented a full week earlier than expected. The mean temperature for the month was 39.4°F, 6.8°F above the mean. The high temperature was 68°F on the 28th and the low was 9°F on the 9th. 0.29” of precipitation was measured, 38% greater than normal. Only a trace of snow fell throughout the month, and the seasonal snowpack went from 10” on the 1st, to <=1” by the 15th. Winds averaged 4.1 mph at the airport and the highest gust was 32 mph on the 10th.

Anchorage April 2010

In Anchorage the average temperature was 36.9°F, just 0.4°F off the monthly mean. The high and low temperatures were 61°F on the 27th, and 20°F on the 7th. Precipitation totaled 1.21 inches, over twice the normal amount for April, and snowfall totaled 14.1”, over three times the average of 4.1”. The seasonal snowpack went from 13” on the first of the month down to a trace by April 22nd. Winds averaged 6.4 mph and the highest reported gust was 39 mph.

Barrow April 2010

Temperatures were much warmer than normal for the third month in a row in Barrow. The average temperature for April was 7.9°F, 8.5°F warmer than the long term mean. The high was 29°F on the 23rd and the low was -25 on the 10th. Precipitation was also above normal at 0.37”, over three times the normal recorded amount of 0.12”. Snowfall reported in April was 8.1”, four times average, making this the fourth snowiest April on record, and the sixth month in a row that above normal snowfall has been recorded in Barrow. A record 5.4” of snow fell on the 21st, the old record was just 1.0”, and the water equivalent was 0.28”, breaking the old record of 0.06” set in 1970. Winds averaged 11.5 mph and the peak gust was 36 mph on the 30th.

Big Delta April 2010

The average temperature in Big Delta was 35.6°F, 3.5°F above the mean for April. The highest temperature was 65°F on the 28th and the low of 4°F was reported on the 10th. Precipitation recorded was 0.79” close to 4-times the normal amount of 0.20”.

Juneau April 2010

Juneau recorded slightly above normal temperatures, precipitation and snowfall in April. The average temperature was 41.9°F, 1.1°F warmer than the mean, and the high and low temperatures were 66°F on the 27th and 24°F on the 10th. Precipitation was just 4% higher than normal, measuring 3.08”. Snowfall occurred for one week in April, the 3rd through the 9th, producing 2.8”, almost three times the normal monthly amount. Winds at the airport averaged about 5.3 mph and a gust of 36 mph was reported on the 3rd.

Ketchikan April 2010

Temperature was normal in Ketchikan, 43.3°F. The high and low temperatures were 60°F on the 15th and 29°F on the 9th. Precipitation totaled 4.75”, which is just under half of the April average of 9.57”. There were a total of 24 days with precipitation during the month and the highest 1-day total was 1.32” on the 6th. Winds at the airport averaged 7 mph and the peak gust was 38 mph recorded on the 1st.

King Salmon April 2010

In King Salmon, the average temperature was 30.9°F, 2.1°F below the average for April. The high temperature for the month was 54°F on the 26th and 27th, and the low was 0°F on the 9th. Precipitation measured 1.09”, 16% higher than normal, and snowfall totaled 5.9”, 34% higher than the monthly mean. Winds at the airport averaged 9.1 mph, and the highest gust was recorded at 55 mph on the 10th.

Nome April 2010

The average temperature in Nome was 20°F, near normal for April. The high reached 43°F on the 18th, and the low was -11 on the 8th. Precipitation was recorded on 26 out of the 30 days, and totaled 0.72”, 11% above normal. Snowfall totaled 11.6, which is 59% more than normal for the month. Winds averaged 8.1 mph with a peak gust of 51 mph on the 10th.
