Nome April 2010

The average temperature in Nome was 20°F, near normal for April. The high reached 43°F on the 18th, and the low was -11 on the 8th. Precipitation was recorded on 26 out of the 30 days, and totaled 0.72”, 11% above normal. Snowfall totaled 11.6, which is 59% more than normal for the month. Winds averaged 8.1 mph with a peak gust of 51 mph on the 10th.

Fairbanks March 2010

Temperatures in Fairbanks were 1.3°F below the normal in the month of March, averaging 10.8°F. The high temperature was 48°F on the 28th and the low was -26°F on the 13th. Precipitation was reported as 0.09”, just 32% of normal, the seventh consecutive month of below normal precipitation. And, in a month when snowfall normally averages 5.3”, Fairbanks received just 1.6” this month. At the end of the month, the seasonal snowfall total was 24.8 inches, 35.8” less than normal for this time in the season. This is the third lowest total winter snowfall through the end of March (for the period 1930-present). While there is still a chance of snowfall in the next 5-weeks, this season may be counted as one of the least snowiest on record. The airport reported 10” of snow on the ground at the end of the month.

Anchorage March 2010

March brought warmer and drier than normal weather to Anchorage. The mean monthly temperature was 27°F, a departure of +0.9°F. The monthly high and lows were 43°F on the 19th, 29th, 30th and 31st, and -5 on the 10th. Precipitation totaled 0.34”, 53% of normal, and snowfall totaled just 0.65” for the month, 9.6” less than normal. The season-to-date total at the end of March was 51.8”, 15.7” less than normal for this time. Just a trace of snow was noticeable on the ground at the International Airport by month's end.

Barrow March 2010

Barrow had a warmer than normal in March with an average temperature of -9.9°F, 3.8°F above normal. The highest and lowest temperatures were 13°F on the 18th, and -43°F on the 15th. Precipitation amounts totaled 0.15”, 0.06” greater than normal. Snowfall totaled 4.1” for the month, which is 2.4” more than normal bringing the total season-to-date snowfall to 39.3”, 12.2” above average. A total of 11” was on the ground by the start of April. On March 10th, Barrow set a new snowfall record of 1.0”, breaking the old record of 0.8” set on that date just last year.

Big Delta March 2010

Big Delta's average temperature was 16.4°F, 2.2°F above normal for the month. High and low temperatures for the month were 45°F on the 28th, 29th, and 31st, and -15°F on the 8th and 13th. Precipitation was only 0.01”, a small fraction of the 0.21” that is normal for March. Snowfall is not recorded a this station so seasonal averages are not available.

Juneau March 2010

Temperatures were on the warm side in Juneau, the average temperature was 36.5°F, 2.9°F above normal for March. The high was 48°F on the 29th and the low for the month was 24°F on the 8th. Precipitation was 6.05”, 72% above normal and snowfall amounts were above normal as well. The airport reported 12.6”, 2.8” more than normal for March. Season-to-date, snowfall is 62.3”, 33.0” below the normal amount. Juneau set a new daily precipitation record of 0.70” on the23rd, smashing the old record of 0.43”, set in 1960, and on the same day, set a new snowfall record of 3.1” surpassing the old record of 1.6” set in 2008.

Ketchikan March 2010

March temperatures averaged 1.3°F degrees above average in Ketchikan this March with a mean monthly value of 39.7°F. The monthly high temperature was 50°F on the 20th and the recorded low was 27°F on the 8th. Precipitation was 13.81” greater than normal for March with 24.50” reported. Precipitation occurred on all but 3 days during the month and the highest daily amount was 3.26” on the 24th.

King Salmon March 2010

King Salmon's average temperature recorded for March was 8°F cooler than the 15.5°F average. The high for the month was 43°F on the 25th and the low was -24°F on the 11th - a new record low. The previous record was -23°F set on that date in 1966. While precipitation totals were 52% below normal for the month (0.41”), snowfall amounts were recorded at 90% above average, 11.8” being reported at the airport. The below normal value of precipitation, but the above normal snowfall was caused by the negative deviation in temperature. A large percentage of the precipitation fell as snow. At the end of the month there was just 4” on the ground. The seasonal snowfall total to-date of 43.9” is 2.6” above normal.

Nome March 2010

March temperatures in Nome averaged 8°F degrees cooler than normal and the average for the month was 1.2°F. The monthly high temperature was 29°F on the 19th, 20th, and 26th. The low temperature was -32°F on the 1st. Precipitation was 0.16”, 27% of normal. Snowfall was less than normal, totaling 4.7”, bringing the season-to-date snowfall to 43.5”, 11.7” less than normal for this time of year. There was 12 inches of snow on the ground at the end of the month, which is also well below average for Nome.
