Anchorage May 2012

Anchorage recorded an average temperature in May of 45.5°F, 2.3°F below the normal of 47.8°F. It is also the first month of this year, when the temperature was lower than for Fairbanks. The more maritime climate of Anchorage has warmer temperatures in winter, but lower temperatures in summer when compared to the more continental climate of Interior Alaska. The maximum temperature of the month occurred on the 23rdwith 65°F, while a minimum temperature of 27°F was observed on the 3rdof May. For the whole month the temperature followed the expected trend fairly closely.
Precipitation was reported at 0.43", which is 40% below the normal of 0.72". The average cloudiness was high with 80% and the mean monthly wind speed was calculated as 8.4 mph and the peak wind speed occurred on 11thMay with 43 mph blowing from a southerly direction.

Barrow May 2012

Barrow reported an average temperature in May of 21.6°F, 0.5°F above normal. The month was fairly close to the expected values, with the exception of a cold spell around the 7thof the month. The trend shows a strong seasonal warming during this month. On the 17th, the maximum temperature of 36°F was reported, while the lowest temperature of -11°F was observed on the 6thof May. No new temperature records were observed during the month.
Precipitation in Barrow totaled 0.50" water equivalent, far above the long-term mean of 0.18". Some snowfall was observed on 22 days, for a total amount of 5.5". The mean monthly wind speed was 10.2 mph and a gust of 31 mph occurred on the 11th, blowing from an easterly direction.

Big Delta May 2012

InBig Delta the mean May temperature was 45.0°F, 2.6°F° below the long term mean. The highest monthly temperatures of 67°F was observed on the 22nd, while the minimum temperature (18°F) occurred on the 3rd. As for Fairbanks, the temperature, while being below normal, followed fairly closely the expected trend for May. And no new daily records were observed.
Precipitation in March was reported as 1.30" water-equivalent, 44% above the expected amount of 0.90".

Juneau May 2012

InJuneau , the average temperature was 44.7°F, a substantial -3.9°F below the long term mean. The maximum temperatures for the month (59°F) occurred on the 24th this value is lower than the maximum temperature observed in April and it was the 8thcoldest May in terms of the daily maximum temperature ever observed in Juneau. One has to go back to 1955 to find a May with a lower average maximum temperature. The minimum temperature (35°F) was recorded on the 15thof May. However, no new daily extremes were observed.
Precipitation totaled 5.73", 77% above the normal of 3.24". It rained on 29 days of the month, and May 2012 was the 4thwettest May on record. Trace snowfall occurred on three days. The trace snowfall on the 15thwas a 'record' in that snowfall had not been recorded on this day before. The mean monthly wind speed was 9.9 mph, with a maximum gust of 44 mph occurring on 20th, blowing from southeast. Furthermore, mean cloudiness was high with 90%.

Ketchikan May 2012

Ketchikan's average temperature of 46.1°F in May was 2.5°F below the long-term mean. While being below normal, the temperature trend was close to the expected values for most of the month. The highest temperature of the month measured 64°F, which occurred on the 24thof May, while the low temperature of 36°F occurred on the 8th, 9thand 13thof the month.
Monthly precipitation was high with 19.25", more than doubling the long term mean of 8.20". Remarkably, 4.73" of rain fell on 6thof May, surpassing by a large amount the old record for this day of 2.40", set in 1959. This total received within a single day surpasses the long-termannual total for Barrow. On the following day, 4.26" of rain were reported, again smashing the previous record for this day of 2.60", which was set in 1973.

King Salmon May 2012

King Salmon reported an average temperature of 41.1°F, 3.1°F below normal. The high temperature was 62°F on 23rdof May, while the low temperature of 22°F occurred on the 13th. The minimum of the 13thtied the old record low set in 1965.
The precipitation total was measured as 1.62", 30% above the normal of 1.25". The snowfall on the 4thof 1.8" surpassed the old record for this day of 1.0", set in 1971. The rainfall on the 10thMay of 0.33" set also a new record by topping the old record from 1991 of 0.32". Average wind speed was 9.3 mph and the highest gust was recorded at 38 mph on both the 18thand 28th, blowing from an easterly direction.

Kodiak May 2012

Kodiak's average temperature of 42.5°F in May was 1.8°F below the long term mean. The highest temperature measured was 61°F on the 23rd, while the low temperature of 29°F occurred on the 13th. The minimum temperature of the 13thmatched the old minimum of 1965 for this day.
Monthly precipitation was measured at 5.93", close to the normal of 5.62". On the 12th0.8" of snow was reported, setting a new daily high. The old high was 0.7" set in 1971. Even later in the season, 2.4" of snowfall were reported for the 13th, also the day with the coldest temperature for May 2012. This surpasses the old record of 0.2 set in 1971. The monthly average wind speed was calculated as 9.2 mph, and on the 1sta gust of 40 mph was recorded, blowing from a westerly direction.

Nome May 2012

Nome reported a mean monthly temperature in May of 33.1°F, considerably below the normal of 36.8°F. This might have been caused by the substantial amount of sea ice in the Bering Sea, which went out later than normal. The warmest monthly temperature was 63°F, observed on the 18thof May. This represents a new daily record, surpassing the old record of 62°F set in 1980. The coldest temperature occurred on the 4thwith 5°F.
Precipitation totaled 0.88", very close to the normal value for May of 0.86". However the fact that nearly all the precipitation (0.84") occurred on one day, the 16thMay was remarkable. This set a new record high for this specific day, by surpassing the old record of 0.40" set in 1990 by more than the factor of two. Furthermore, it represents the highest amount of rain ever observed on any one day in May in Nome, where the record stretches back to 1907. The old time previous daily May record had been set on 28 May 1996 at 0.76". The average wind speed for the month was light with 5.8 mph, and the highest gust observed was 28 mph on the 16th, blowing from a southeasterly direction.

Fairbanks April 2012

In Fairbanks the average April temperature was 36.9°F, a substantial 4.4°F above the long term mean. The high temperature for the month was 61°F on the 16th, which is also a new record high for this day. The previous maximum for this day was 59°F observed in 1993. The low temperature for the month was -8°F observed on the 4th. The beginning of the month was much colder than normal, followed by above normal temperatures, especially around the middle of the month, while the end of April reported seasonally normal temperatures. It was the 13thwarmest April on record, and above normal temperatures resulted in an early breakup of the Tanana River. The ice went out at Nenana on the 23rdof April.
Precipitation in April was far below normal with only 0.07" water-equivalent, which represents only 23% of the expected precipitation. The snow cover, measuring 22" at the beginning of the month, had disappeared at the airport by the 20th. The mean wind speed was 4.2 mph, with the highest gust of 32 mph occurring on the 24thApril, blowing from a northwesterly direction.
