Barrow October 2010

The high temperature for the month was 32°F on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th, and the low temperature was 7°F on the 31st. The total precipitation for the month was 0.33”, 15% below normal. Snowfall was recorded at 8.6”, and the snow depth was 4” at the end of the month. Winds averaged 16.8 mph and the highest gust reported was 40 mph on the 30th.

Big Delta October 2010

The average temperature for Big Delta, this month, was 27.6°F, 3.5°F above normal. The high temperature was 55°F on the 2nd, and the low temperature was 5°F on the 16th and the 31st. Precipitation was measured at 1.19”, 63% above normal for October.

Juneau October 2010

The mean monthly temperature in Juneau was 42.7°F, just 0.4°F above normal for the month. The high temperature was 57°F on the 1st, and the low was 28°F on the 22nd. The recorded precipitation for October was 8.84”, 7% above normal. A peak gust of 68 mph was reported on the 12th.

Ketchikan October 2010

Ketchikan's average temperature for October was 46.8°F, 1.0°F above average for the month. A high of 60°F was recorded on the 24th, and a low of 32°F was reported on the 28th of the month. Precipitation was measured on all but 3-days in October, and the total amount measured was 34.80”, 72% above normal for the month. The greatest one-day precipitation total was an impressive 4.56” recorded on the 29th.

King Salmon October 2010

In King Salmon, the average temperature was 35.4°F, 2.1°F above the long term mean for October. A high temperature of 57°F was recorded on the 1st, and the low for the month was 16°F on the 12th. October precipitation measured 1.70”, 19% below normal. Snowfall was reported at 0.7” for the month, and the winds at the airport averaged 7.1 mph with a peak gust of 43 mph on the 27th.

Nome October 2010

The October average temperature in Nome was 31.9°F, 3.4°F above the long term mean. The reported high was 47°F on the 3rd and 4th, and the low was 13°F on the 21st. Precipitation was measured at 1.70”, just 8% above normal. Snowfall totaled 7.1”, the heaviest snow day was on the 13th of the month and 1.5” was recorded. Winds averaged 8.2 mph at the airport and a gust of 47 mph occurred on the 27th.

Fairbanks September 2010

The average temperature for Fairbanks in September was 47.1°F, 2.3°F warmer than the long term mean. The high temperature was 70°F on the 13th and the low was 14°F on the 28th. The first frost of the season, 32°F occurred on the 22nd, and low temperatures remained below freezing for the rest of the month. This extended the normal length of the growing season by 2-weeks. Total precipitation for the month was 1.19”, 12% above normal. On the 8th, Fairbanks AP reported a record rainfall amount of 0.78”, breaking the old record of 0.59” set in 1920. There were reports of very light snow flurries on the 26th, in the hills north of Fairbanks, specifically in the Murphy Dome area. Winds in September averaged 4 mph, with the highest gust of 31 mph recorded on the 24th.

Anchorage September 2010

Anchorage reported an average temperature of 49.6°F, 1.3°F above normal for the month. The highest temperature was 67°F recorded on the 12th, and the low was 26°F on the 28th. The first frost date fell on the 27th of September, with a recorded temperature of 27°F. The cold spell lasted only two days before it once again warmed. Precipitation was measured at 1.01”, which is 63% below normal for the month. Winds averaged 5.2 mph in September and the highest gust was 52 mph recorded on the on the 24th.

Barrow September 2010

The average temperature in Barrow last month was 37.4°F, substantially above normal again this month, by 6.2°F. The high temperature for the month was 55°F on the 11th and the low temperature was 13°F on the 30th. The first frost date for Barrow was recorded on the 10th, with a temperature of 31°F. This is a late first frost date for Barrow, which normally experiences a first frost in August. Only in four previous instances has the first frost come in September; 1951 (9th), 1954 (12th), 1979 (12th), and again just last year, 2009 (7th). Low temperatures increased from the 12th to the 20th, then returned to below freezing through the month. The total precipitation for September was 0.56”, just 7% below normal. Snowfall was recorded as 5.7”, and the snow depth remained at 3” at the end of the month. On the 28th, 1.9” of snow was reported which was a new record for that date, the old record was 1.6” in 2000. Winds averaged 11.6 mph and the highest gust reported was 43 mph on the 25th.
