Anchorage August 2011

Anchorage recorded an average temperature of 54.9°F, 1.8°F below normal. During the whole month of August, the temperature never reached 70°F the highest temperature occurred on the 16that 68°F and the low of 41°F was observed on the 28th. No temperature records were set during the month, and the observed temperatures followed fairly closely the expected values.
Precipitation was reported at 3.91", which is 20% above the normal value. Mean monthly cloudiness was 80%, and on 26 days some precipitation was measured. An average monthly wind speed of 5.7 mph and a gust of 40 mph on the 7thwere recorded.

Barrow August 2011

Barrow reported an average temperature in August of 42.1°F, 3.2°F above normal, the highest positive deviation of the 8 cities reviewed for this summary. The maximum temperature occurred on the 5thwith 58°F, and the lowest temperature of 33°F was observed on the 25thof August it is also somewhat remarkable that no frost occurred during the month of August. In general, the temperatures during the most of the month were close to normal, with the exception of the beginning and the end, when above normal temperatures occurred. No new records were observed during August.
Precipitation in Barrow totaled 0.82", 22% below the normal value. No snow was observed during the month. The mean monthly wind speed was 11.4 mph and a gust of 37 mph occurred on the 4th.

Big Delta August 2011

Big Deltareported a mean temperature of 53.6°F, which is 1.2°F below the long-term mean temperature for August. The high temperature of the month was observed on the 4thwith 70°F and the low temperatures for the month occurred on 8that only 34°F. While this latter value came close to the absolute minimum of 33°F observed in 1969, no new extreme temperatures were observed during this month.

Precipitation totaled 1.44", 24% below the expected amount. Just as for temperatures, no new precipitations records were set.

Juneau August 2011

InJuneau , the average temperature was 53.1°F, markedly (-2.8°F) below normal for August. It is notable that both the maximum temperature (66°F) and the minimum temperature (40°F) for the month occurred on the same day, the 13thof August.
Precipitation totaled 10.72", which is a significant 87% above normal. This came close to the maximum amount ever measured for the month of August, which was 11.02" set in 2006. Explicitly, this was the 4thwettest August on record. On the 15th, 16th, and 20thnew record precipitation totals were logged, with the 16thand 20ththe recording identical values of 1.38". A number of other stations in the Southeast Alaska reported also record rainfalls on the 20th. In addition, the record precipitation was tied on the 28that 0.76", a record that had been set in 1988. As might be deduced from the high precipitation recorded, sky cover averaged 90%, with 30 cloudy days and some rain occurring on 28 days of the month. Average wind speed at Juneau Airport was 7.1 mph with a highest wind gust of 41 mph on the 20th.

Ketchikan August 2011

Ketchikan'saverage temperature of 56.8°F in August was 1.2°F below the long-term mean. The highest temperature of the month measured 71°F on the 9th, while the low temperature of 44°F occurred on the 25thof the month. While the mean monthly temperature was somewhat below the expected value, nevertheless the daily temperature ranges followed fairly closely the long-term means. No new temperature extremes were observed.

Monthly precipitation was measured at 17.73", nearly twice the expected amount of 9.81". Remarkable were the precipitation events of the 20thand the 23rdof the month, with totals of 4.63" and 3.80", respectively, and setting new records for these days. The episode of the 20thsurpassed the old record of 3.38" previously set in 1956, while the rain of the 23rdtopped previous record of 3.13" from 1972. Many other stations in the Southeast Alaska reported also record rainfalls on the 20th.

King Salmon August 2011

King Salmon reported an average temperature of 52.1°F, a substantial 2.5°F below the long term mean. The high temperature for August was 71°F, recorded on the 17thand the lowest temperature was 33°F on the 23rd. This latter value represents a new record low for this specific day. The old record had been 34°F set in 1969.
The precipitation total was measured as 3.99", surpassing the normal value of 2.95" by 1.04". On 25 days of August at least some rain was recorded. Average wind speed was 7.4 mph and the highest gust was recorded at 36 mph on the 19th.

Nome August 2011

Nome reported a mean monthly temperature in August of 48.0°F, a negative deviation of 2.1°F from the long term mean. The warmest monthly temperature was 70°F observed on the 19thof August, while the coldest temperature was a light frost (30°F), which occurred on the 28thof the month. No new temperature extremes were observed during July.
Precipitation was high, totaling 4.36", 35% above the expected amount. The rainfall of the 11thAugust set a new record for the day (1.21"), surpassing the old record of 1.05 set in 1958. The average wind speed for the month was 7.7 mph, and the highest gust observed was 37 mph on the 24th.

Fairbanks July 2011

In Fairbanks the average temperature was 61.7°F, 0.8°F below the long term mean for July. The high temperature for the month was 81°F on the 22nd of July, while the lowest temperature of 45°F was observed on the 17th and 20th of the month. In general it was found that the whole month was close to normal and no new daily records, be it maxima or minima, were logged during July.

Precipitation in July was 1.70", just 2% below the expected value. However, the month was cloudy (mean sky cover 74%) and on 16 days some precipitation was detected, three days more than normal. Substantially more precipitation was recorded in the upper Chena Basin. As pointed out already in the June report, large variations in rainfall are typical for the summer season in the Interior, due to shower activity caused by thunderstorms, which is patchier than precipitation due to frontal activity. Wind speed averaged 4.0 mph and the highest gust was 35 mph on the 6th.

Anchorage July 2011

Anchorage recorded an average temperature of 57.8°F, 0.6°F below normal. The highest temperature for July was 72°F on the 22nd and the low of 45°F occurred on the 20th. No temperature records were set during the month, and the observed temperature followed fairly closely the expected values.

Precipitation was reported at 2.08", which represents 22% above the normal value. An average monthly wind speed of 5.4 mph and a gust of 43 mph on the 29th were recorded.
