Talkeetna Station History

Located in Susitna Valley, near head of broad valley to Cook Inlet at junction of Susitna and Chulitna rivers. Low hills to east, river and string bogs to west. Current coordinates 62 degrees 18' N, 150 degrees 6' W, elevation 345', AAG map 93. Station opened 3/16/1917 at Alaska Railroad Depot with 8' instrument heights. Move 0.1 mile S to foreman's residence 7/11/31. Move half mile SSE and 9' downhill to Talkeetna Airport, became CAA/FAA station and temperature lowered to 5' 6/1/40. Move 0.1 mile NW at Airport 10/10/44. USWB took over 10/1/67. HO8 series hygrothermometer installed 3/10/88.

Observation time originally 5 pm. Changed to 8 pm 6/1/1940, to midnight 10/10/44. Back to 8 pm 3/1/65 and remained there through present.

Current observer USWS, formerly FAA. Length of record good. Data continuity good from 1921, with missing data only in 1930 through 1932. Site continuity fair to good, with largest move 0.5 miles. Time of observation variable but always late afternoon to midnight. Heat island effect unlikely.
